What's up with used Prius values? KBB, TMV, etc

It has alot to do with your location... You did not list location? What region do you live in?

$11k does seem pretty close though... I paid that for a spotless '07 Prius #2 with 100K 12 months ago. So if you figure in an additional year's depreciation (~18%) on an '07 and your low mileage value that sound pretty close to a good price.

Seems the 09's are depreciating slower, last of a generation I suppose? They don't make 'em as nice as they use to.

 

I've tried to trade in my 07, with 72K miles, best I could do was $8500, one offer to $7500. Car's in great shape, needs a bath now after the latest snow. Trying to sell outright with balance of extended warranty.

I do notice used Priusses (Priuiii?) sit on the lot for a while at used car dealers, and the dealers ask a premium price.

 

07 with 79k miles -- $10k to $11k seems close. I would count yourself lucky if you can get $11k. Closer to $10 is more realistic in my opinion...

 

In november I paid 12,500 for a 09 with 78,000 miles form a crappy used car dealer here in Grand Rapids Michigan. Not a loaded one either.

 

I bought in that region a year ago... Prices in the SF Bay Area are noticeably higher than prices in Sacramento Valley because there is was more money in SF Bay Area... So if you want to maximize your selling price sell it in South SF Bay Area... If you want to buy at lowest price head east to a less expensive landscape...

 

The car is worth what someone is willing to pay you for it. You put it up for what you think it is worth, and then see if someone else agrees. They you get to sell it.

I list my vehicles at NADA price, which is usually much higher than Kelley or Edmund. Usually takes a few months to sell, but I'm getting top dollar for my car (which honestly usually isn't it great shape, but good maintenance).

Southern Illinois, near St. Louis. I could live with 11K or so. When gas first went up 2-3 years ago I was a the dealer getting the MFD looked at, the used car manager strolled in, offered me 500 more than I paid for it when I bought it there used. My reply was "yeah, but then I'd have to buy it back... no thanks"

 

yea... when gas prices went up, high MPG cars were worth way more... VW TDI and Prius was what everyone suddenly wanted and Toyota had great sales while all the other car dealership were shutting down. Prius ended up ramping up volume at rates that to this day they continue to sustain. VW for some reason failed, or maybe it was imports and tariffs that did 'em in? Regardless if gas prices go up again alot of old Gen2 Prius are gonna change hands...

 

The other part is just how quickly you want to sell. How long have these listing been up on Craigslist? Look at both the posting date but then also look back and see if the same ad has been posted before. My guess is these sellers are OK with waiting for a high price.

Let me put this another way. Looking for a 2008 or 2009 Prius with 75 K or fewer miles in good condition -- no significant accidents -- and I'll be really happy to see one that has been maintained since day one on synthetic oil. I own a 2008 with 100,000 miles, and have had to pay out about 1100 Dollars for maintenance as it approached the 100,000 mile mark. These included replacing spark plugs, replacing front brake pads, replacing headlights twice, replacing drive belt, and some other misc. things. Before this spate of maintenance costs, the car had less than normal maintenance costs, including 1 set of tires, rear brake cleaning, cabin filter, and that's all. It cost me less than my 09 corolla, which has very low mileage and has already had a new battery, new front brakes, new tires, new water pump (actually that was covered by the drive train warranty.) The Prius is a better car. I want to trade the Corolla for one, particularly since I have now been to the Luscious Garage in San Francisco.

 

Front brake pads on the Prius? Everything I've heard about front brake pad replacement interval is far more than 100K. What was up with that?

 

I don't know. I wondered if it was reasonable, but I have noticed a smooth decline in the pad as reported by the service center. My husband drives this car 99.99 per cent of the time, and I suspect he may use the brakes more than I would? I can't approach him about this topic, however, because I have larger fish to fry. It was a 260 dollar repair, and I an hardly deny him brakes. What about the driving belt? That one surprised me and was not cheap. I think around 180.00.

 

It's location and looking at craigslist. All the ones that sell at ~edmunds/kbb pricing (listing versus selling) are not going to sit on there for long, while all the ones you're seeing have been sitting for a while because they aren't priced appropriately.

 

I thought that the drive belt was an ordinary $20 belt driving the water pump, a less than thirty minute job. Shouldn't have run more than $50 installed, maybe more at Toyota but certainly not almost $200?
