I think this is a big disingenuous. Its probably 100MPGe on all electric. How much range do we give these trucks?

Also it begs the question, WHY would you need an escalade? If you can get 100mpg on an escalade then you can probably get 150-200mpg on a smaller body.

Volt is rated 98 MPGe on electricity so there is no way these trucks are going to get any better.

I think this is the same non-sense of dividing electric miles with gasoline gallons. Ignore the electricity input and only count the gas used.

Say, the gas engine gets 10 MPG. Drive 90 miles with electricity. Total 100 miles divided by 1 gallon = 100 MPG. LOL

I'm all for new efficient products regardless of who is producing them or where they are coming from.

But of course, you wait to see what the REAL product becomes.

It's a testament to the success of Prius that Bob Lutz takes that shot at Prius. He's probably been dying to say Prius and Gas Guzzler in the same sentence, for years.

On a slightly different note, the entire presentation is somewhat interesting to me. Still pushing America's fascination with "Power".

Even though I know some people do need different tools for different jobs. I've been on this planet 45+ years, and can count on one hand the number of times I've needed "Stump Pulling Torque".

But it sounds like Lutz is having fun. Let him push his electric stump puller.

It's awesome that GM is continuing to work on serious electric cars. I would love to see them succeed. However, at $80,000, this particular vehicle, like the Tesla, will not have much of an impact on the car market other than as a curiosity and technical test bed.

Actually Lutz has a long history of being a car guy who really is into the technology. But do I really need a monster like this? Imagine the weight any battery would add to this already overweight SUV. Kinda like the Porsche Cayanne SUV hybrid on steroids. I don't pull a trailer and I don't haul 8 people and, if I did, I could rent a truck for 5% of the extra cost of lugging around this huge thing.

    without regard for cost

That's what the history has taught us. Speed, Size, and Power like that are well beyond mainstream needs. If you want an everyday vehicle for the common person, ask someone else.

Anyone with half a brain knows he is talking out his rear end. I wonder why rubish like that even gets published... It serves no other purpose than misinformation.

I honestly took his comment in reference to the standard Prius with its 50+ mpg as the epitome of the gas saving hybrid economy car of today which it is.

When thinking of a hybrid people automatically think of a Prius... not a hybrid Escalade!

"The wheels are powered by a rear-mounted 300-kilowatt (402-hp) electric motor, powered by a liquid-cooled 24-kilowatt-hour battery pack that sits between the frame rails and contains lithium-ion cells provided by A123 Systems.

This gives the pickup an electric range of up to 40 miles using no gasoline at all. Once the pack is depleted, a 4.3-liter V-6 engine kicks in to power a generator that feeds electricity to the drive motor for an 400 miles of range.
    100 mpg for 60-70 miles
That 100 mpg, by the way, assumes daily use of no more than, say, 60 or 70 miles: 40 on electric, the other 20 or 30 miles covered using 1 gallon of gas. More gas-fueled miles lowers the effective mileage." What Would You Pay For A 100-MPG Via Full-Size Pickup Truck?

let's assume that the target market consists of escalade owners. people that for some valid reason need that style of a vehicle. perhaps they shuttle folks from company headquarters to the airport, they have 5 kids, or they haul a trailer full of equipment for a blood drive.

getting 40 miles on electric each charge is awesome.

Of course Bob Lutz is the spokeperson for what is wrong with America regarding vehicle choice. But a Volt esque large SUV would probably sell pretty well. When you are paying $60k anyway, another $20k doesn't look so bad. The payback is not bad when you think of all those 15 mpg trips that switch to electricity.

The vast majority of miles on an escalade are of the less than 50 miles per day variety.
