Since jojoba oil is used as a cheaper subsititute for whale oil - and that's going for $200/gallon -- I am willing to bet my wife's jojoba cosmetics that whale oil is not used in plastics.

Toyota should upgrade their VPNS to emit an ultrasonic noise to drive off mice when the car is off, in addition to the audible noise it makes to drive off people while the car is moving.

If you saw this damage to rubber hoses, foam insulation and plastic connectors which can disable your car, you would not think of this as humorous, especially if it was your car!

Nobody died and you have insurance. It just comes down to a material inconvenience.

If it were my car I would still maintain my sense of humor. When you have no sense of humor, you are at the mercy of the world.

it's hard to maintain a sense of humor when your vehicle is being torn apart piece by piece by rodents. I don't know if insurance would cover the rodent damage.

Is the vehicle still being torn apart by nesting rats? If so then why has nothing been done to prevent that from happening?

If it were my car, the first thing I would do is call my insurance company and secure the car from further rodent damage.

Ah! Made in Japan. I didnt see soy products mentioned in the "biodegradable" plastics used in the Prius. Actually they use the term biodegradable rather loosely and mention frequently that the plastics are recyclable. None of the parts mentioned are engine parts.

Our VW TDI has been a magnet for mice in the past and our dealership states they see it all the time in their cars cleaning nests out daily. We installed a mouse blocker under recommendation from our neighbor who had one installed in their Prius over a year ago. So far we have had great luck with this and think this should be an accessory available at the dealerships for people with problems like ours. www.mouseblocker.com

By being biodegradable doesn't mean there's whale oil in Toyota plastics.....or soy oil.....
I wonder if there's any oil in Toyota plastics.....why would there be any??
    What does it improve?

I worked for Eastman Chemical at a PET producing plant and I can't see where oil comes in the picture.

And whale oil in plastic??? You got to be kidding!

The Japanese only kill whales for research purposes! o_O

do not know what kind of research though......

Don't believe everything you read on the interwebs......use your common sense.

I don't know what you did at that plant, but plastics are made from crude oil, natural gas, or agricultural oils.

I used to have mice in our storage area in winter.
Tried conventional traps with Dutch cheese and peanut butter.....sometimes we caught one but they reproduce like.....mice.
A couple of years ago we placed an ultrasonic device (like the mouseblocker) in the storage area and since then: no mice!
Two years later my neighbor also had a mouse problem....she didn't want traps (she doesn't even kill a housefly) and I got her an ultrasonic device also......problem solved!

Oh thanks for the enlightening post.

You probably also think there's hydrogen in water? (yeah I know there are very small amounts of deuterium and tritium in water....but technically speaking that's not hydrogen)

Trust me....I know how plastics are made......and please trust me again: there's no whale oil in plastic!!!!!!

The building blocks for plastic (monomers) can be made out of all kind of oil-derivates (like naphtha) but that doesn't mean there's oil in plastics......

Sorry didn't answer your question: sweeping the floor and cleaning the toilets for the engineers.

I believe oil is used as raw ingredient as a source of hydrocarbon but it is hydrocracked and relinked to plastic polymer. The end product contains no oil.

What about the damaged rubber hoses and other "rubber " parts mentioned. Yokohama clearly states that vegetable oil is used in the tires they supply for the prius. The main point you are missing here is that something is used on certain connectors used in Toyota cars and trucks that attracts rats to damage and eat them. One of the mgrs. at my local Toyota dealer stated this this was their observation of damage to customers cars. For what its worth, which is little in this discussion, is that the Japanese have used fish and mammal oils in creative ways to manufacture materials and for lubrication since and during WW2. It is interesting to note that whale oil additives are mentioned in Corvette forums to correct late model transmission problems. If this is correct, where do you think this whale oil comes from. The Japanese don't talk much about harvesting whale oil or how much they harvest, what they use it for and who they sell it to. Imagine how it would go over if the green people found out that whale oil was used in the manufacture of their prius. I also like whales and porpoises. I'd like to see the last about whale oil, some are missing the trees for the forrest.
