Since by accident I discovered that no heat equals all electric ( I wish that the salesman had mentioned that), my 3+ mile trips are at the magic 999 mpg level. Anyways, it takes a little time before the heat really takes effect. So for practical purposes, the heater is not needed. However I am sometimes forced to use the defroster, otherwise I would be driving blind. What a great car.
you can defrost with floor/windscreen setting , low temp and low fan without engine. and you could have learned all this a lot sooner by paying attention here!
I can't keep my ICE off in single digit weather no matter how careful I am. Tired of freezing and driving blind. I'll wait till spring to get the super milage everyone talks about. Satisfied with my 50+ now.
The key to use a low heater setting. There's a direct relation between it and the engine coolant. A higher setting means the engine will run more. It's very easy to see if you have an aftermarket gauge. In other words, having the heater set at "65" will cause the engine to shut off sooner than if you had it at "75" and much much sooner than "HI".
Mine is always on LO. ICE still comes on at the same place, every day. But I'm fine. No OCD for me. And no, I'm not going to shift into Neutral etc. Tried the simple stuff and am content.
yes, i wouldn't expect the ice to stay off in single digit weather either. you might as well turn the temp up a bit and enjoy it!
Turn the fan on low and direct the air to floor/windshield. You get a nominal amount of defrosting, good enough only sometimes. And you probably want to pick outside air, too. Mike
This is covered in the FAQ set the temperature to LO, vent direction to foot+windshield, and fan to whatever speed you desire. Do not press the front defrost button. Also, there's a thing about making sure the temperature is set to LO before you turn on the fan, consult the FAQ for more details
exactly. make sure temp is set to 'low'. deinately need outside air and you can turn the fan up as high as you need. only downside is your feets get a bit cold. i'm experimenting with foam rubber to stuff in the outlets.
interestingly, i just started yesterday. the outlet is a very odd shape and divided into a large and small side. i bought some foam and cut it into what i think will stay in, and yet be relatively easy to remove when you want floor heat and replace when you don't. it's most likely going to take more than a few tries to come up with something ideal.
the first shot worked pretty well. the foam is a 1" x 1" by 36" and i cut 6" and stuffed it in the large side. there was some leakage, so i think i need something like 1" x 2". it pretty much stopped the small side, and i don't plan to remove it at all, although i'm not sure why there are two sides and i might have to change that theory. so, tomorrow, i'll try something larger. there is something for air conditioners in the weatherstripping isle at home depot and lowes. eventually, i would like to add some type of hard plastic to it so i can easily remove and insert as necessary.
Assuming much of what goes on behind the buttons is software or firmware, it sure would be nice if there were some avenues to making small changes, e.g. change "foot+windshield" to "windshield only" or change the front defrost heat requirement. The other thing I'd love to change is the mix of EV and ICE when in HV. If I'm a mile from my house on city streets with some hills, it's difficult to stay in the EV portion--even if I know I have enough overall power to make it to my charger. API please! (That's Application Programming Interface--where the wet ware gets to have a say...)
i doubled the foam on the large side and it was better, but i can still feel cold air. it's a really tough spot to see, i think i'm going to have to try a mirror.
