Ice knock and cel

12 degF last night. Drove on EV. When ICE started I got a REALLY bad knock and engine vibration. Pulled into a parking lot and stopped the PIP. Restarted and the knock went away, but poor engine response to the gas pedal. Stopped the PIP again, restarted and now OK, except for the Check Engine light. Drove ok to the dealer.

Dealer got T0304 code, Misfire Cylinder 4, and cleared it. Seems to be ok.
I asked if he called Toyota Care to report the incident. He said no, it's probably a one time event.
Interesting.

I printed the above Toyota Tech Service Bulletin and will give it to him.
I'll call Toyota Care !!!

 

Yes, make sure they fully document the incident. Probably not a one time event... unfortunate.

 

I called Toyota Care and opened a Case#.

 

I can't imagine this ever being good for the engine.
Pedal response is intentionally muted when engine begins warmup to lower emissions.
Why do people keep thinking they are smarter than the engineers who built this car?

My concern is the Dealer should report the engine misfire and knock to Toyota, instead of just saying "we'll see if it happens again". Toyota Care agent seemed concerned and opened a Case # to report it to the engineers.

Nope. Drove out of my neighborhood in EV, on the main st stepped on the gas pedal to turn on the ICE and it started knocking and shaking. Had to cycle the PIP off and on twice before it was ok, but with the Check Engine light.

 

huh, seems like a lot of people get it when they had previously started the ice to move the car in the driveway or something. what was the privious ice on experience, can you remember?

 

It was used the day before from work for Heat and the Highway, like normal.
The Dealer started suggesting it might be a bad slug of gas, but I filled up the end of Dec.
If it was water or something in the gas, I would think it would affect more than one cylinder.

 

yes, doesn't sound like gas to me either. and it's not a cold soak. interesting that it just happened after all this time.

What I mean is restarting the engine 3 times (!) in the span of a few seconds can't be good. Imho anyway.

 

i know, he started this thread and another. he had started his ice for a few seconds and shut it down prior to his knock experience as others have.

 

This happened to me just a few days ago. It was -17 below zero temp. in the morning when I left for work. My car was in the garage all night, but it's not heated. I pulled it in, so I had to start the car and back out. As soon as the ICE kicked in after putting it in reverse, that terrible knocking and engine shimmy started and scared the crap out of me. I thought something had broken. I got out of the garage, and figured it was due to the extreme cold. I didn't restart, but just continued out of the driveway, hoping that as the engine got warmer, it would stop. No check engine light or anything came on. When I got down the road about a half a mile, it stopped.
I called Toyota and reported it. The person I spoke to checked his files, or whatever he had to check anc could fine NOTHING reported about the PIP--great! I told him I was concerned about damaging the engine if it continues because it DOES get that cold and colder up here. He told me to take it to my dealer and have them check it.
Well, I called my dealership and told them. They said it happens to many of the PIP and other Hybrids they have stitting on the lot when they go out to start them. I ask them if it would do damage over the long term..they said--no--if it was causing damage, the engine light would come on and stay on, but if I wanted to bring it in and have them check it, I could. WELL, what good is that going to do??? I'd have to bring it in over night when it would be predicted to be well below zero again, and I don't know when that would be--I guess I'll just have to wait until a future weather report predicts that and take a chance and let them have it overnight. It's been very cold many nights, close between 1-10 degrees above, and nothing happened--all was well starting up in the morning. It was just this intense -17 below so far that it happened. I have a hard time believing that Toyota has nothing on file about this!!! And I am very skeptical about it not causing damage????? My 2006 Prius that I had for three years prior to getting my PIP never did this...and it got well below zero MANY MANY times while I had it. I will keep you all posted if it happens again and see what my dealership finds. Good luck all you PIP owners in COLD areas!

If they didn't, can you call them again and open a Case #?

Yes, they gave me a case number, but I don't have it here at home w/ me. I called from work. Hopefully I'll still find it on my desk among the PILE of things there!! I'll post it if/when I find it.

What part of the country are you? What would you say the humidity was like that morning// night before?

It states thatinitial engine start after cold soak in temperatures below 40 degF (4.5 degC):
• MIL “ON” with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303. and/or P0304.
• Initially runs rough.

• Loud engine knock or rattle noise.

They changed their
Intake Manifold Assembly.

We need to document all our occurances with Case #'s.
