Prius 'family' ranked #13 in sales of 265 SUV, trucks and cars Nov. '12 in US. Don't have year end '12 yet. Prius / v was #21 last year.

Prius family is Toyota's #3 seller, just behind Corolla / Matrix and Camry.

Corolla, Camry, Accord, Civic, etc.... and their 'copies' on their 9th generation. ..

Prius only on 3rd gen. Where will Prius be in a few more generations?

I see lots of Prius liftbacks every day

 

Hopefully at least at 5% market penetration rather than about 2%?

Like I said, hybrid, that includes from all manufacturers are under 4% of new vehicles, and less than 2% of the fleet. I consider 2% very small. That doesn't mean individual vehicles don't do well, but its a huge misrepresentation to state that the goal of toyota is to have hybrids replace all existing vehicles, and somehow its succeeding even though the market penetration is still in the low single digits.

I don't think for the majority of americans the cost of adding a big motor and battery makes sense, unless you are also adding a plug to help substitute away from gasoline. Market share for non-plug-in hybrids has been not grown very much in the last 5 years. We have simply had a rotation between vehicles.

Broken down by Prius model, the Prius Liftback represented 147,507 units sold, 15.3 percent better than 2011; the Prius v represented 40,669 units in its first full year of sales and the Prius c represented 35,733 units. The plug-in version of the Liftback reached 12,750 sales.

Goals are set are from within each automaker's production. For that milestone, it's all Toyota/Lexus markets.

The point is to have one, by stating an ultimate goal and stating milestones. Automakers set their own. But upcoming CARB/EPA & CAFE requirements obviously influence the business decisions, as does the need to be competitive.

 

Be a little careful with the comparison to 2011.. since 2011 was worse than 2010 because of the Tsunami. Part supply was a real problem them and production was down for much of the year.

But I do agree that the new models are helping their sales as it offers more choices.

 

What does 'make sense' mean ?

National security ?
The domestic economy ?
Pollution ?
Oil subsidy ?
Out of pocket, lifetime TCO ?
TCO over two years and a day ?
That less expensive ways to add HP exist ?
Or perhaps just a tautology: they have not bought hybrids in numbers, ergo it must not 'make sense' ?

 

I recall Toyota saying Prius (family) is a 'very important vehicle for them', and it is, their #3 seller.

Dashboard reports usually shows about 3% market share for all hybrids in US. About 1/2 percent for all plug-ins.

Turns out the Prius liftback is the best 'package' to put hybrid drivetrain in. No other mfr. wants to dupe the liftback quite yet, but Ford C-Max sort of close. I'll bet Honda is thinking about putting their two motor Hybrid in an upsized Insight for 2016 or 17.

There is nothing wrong with the hybrids sitting at 3% of the new car market. There is a lot wrong with the subsidized price of fuel in the US

 

Bothers me to see Ford Fusion that far down the list. Honda's been hammering lately; an all new Accord, CR-V and quick refresh on Civic. Honda has 3 of the top 10 spots, Toyota 2, Ford 2.

 

I think the Civic did very well despite the fact that CR labeled it as: "Not Recommended"

Anyone seen C-Max figures for December '12?

 

4310 down from 4848 in November. Total for the year is 13,309 which is well above expectations. The negative press especially from consumer reports along with production problems impacted December sales. I have not seen break down between energi and hybrid model for december yet. 26% were energy models in november.

 

I agree with all of that. Remember my statement about small percentage was in reference to the idea that hybrids goal is to replace all non hybrid vehicles, and that toyota is accomplishing that goal. That statement has nothing to do with reality. The prius was a game changer, now it is an important profit center for toyota.
