Help! Weird issue with my 06

Do you have a red triangle/check engine light? If not...

How old is your 12 volt battery? Check the charge on your 12 volt battery... If it is less than 12.3volts you need to replace the battery...

 

Check the voltage of the battery with a digital volt meter. It sounds like the 12 volt battery is run down. You can check it under the hood at the jump post in the fuse box. You may find that the battery is discharged, and needs to be recharged and or replaced.

Once you get the battery charged back up, I would think that the problem you are having will go away. I do note that your car is a '06 model, so if the 12 volt is the original and has not been changed more than likely that is the source of your problem.

Also, if you attempt to jump start the car, make certain that you connect everything correctly as per the manual. Jump starting a Prius can only be done one way, and if it done incorrectly you can possibly damage the inverter. Replacing the inverter is a 4 digit repair cost.

Try to measure the voltage as I wrote above and then post back with the measurement.

If you do have a battery charger, set it to 4 AMPS and AGM settings, then connect it to the jump post and the strut nut. You want to connect the positive (red) terminal to the jump post and the negative (black) to the strut nut. That way you can get started on recharging the battery. Before you hook up that charger, let us know what the voltage really is.

Another way to test the battery is to run the test at Weird stuff happening? MPGs dropping? Test The Battery | PriusChat after the car has sat MANY hours or overnight. Please tell us the 3 values (not just 1). Don't go changing the battery first until you tell us the values...

If you have HIDs, you can avoid unnecessary cycles on the lights by toggling between off and parking light positions.

Weird stuff can start happening w/a low or bad 12 volt. Don't waste $ on having a dealer "test" the 12 volt (07 Prius Dead - Any Guesses? | PriusChat). If you're on you're original 12 volt, it's likely near or at end of life now.

I changed mine in my 06 (bought new in January 06) back in Feburary 2011.

 

Based on what EricW wrote in his or her post, I doubt very seriously if he/she will be able to conduct the standard test that most of us recommend. The last post that he/she made does state that the car won't do much of anything, therefore it is logical to think that there won't be enough power remaining to conduct the voltage test via the MFD.

I think you should thaw out the car, it sounds frozen, as it;s thawing replace the 12volt battery, at least disconnect it for 10 minutes and let the digital components reset.

 

The car will give warnings that something is "on" when you try to lock the car. Perhaps that is what you heard the first time.

A voltmeter has many uses but there is no need to buy one just for this. Run the built-in test linked to above. Odds are that the battery will not look so good, having now been drained at least once.
