Is there anyway to keep them on when you turn the headlights on? I realize I can hard wire them to come on, I have done this with a few cars but I am new to this Prius thing only owned this carwith for 2you weeks.
Haha, no problem, it happens to all of us using these damned phones, tablets etc one time or another.
You can rewire the DRLs to auto dim when hooked up to a low beam headlight or parking light wire. Sketched something up quick and dirty: I'm not an electrical engineer, so I don't know what the resistor value needs to be to get a voltage drop across the DRLs LEDs to achieve a 30 to 50% dimming when the low beam/parking light control wire is activated. Disclaimer: If you try this, do so at your own risk. I am not responsible if you blow up or damage your Prius in any way. Edit: Some of the ratings on the fuses, relays, and wiring is most likely high for this application. I modified a diagram I already had from my high beam DRL mod which uses 65w 9005 bulbs, so the LED DRLs would use a lot less current/amps.
Here in the EU you cannot have the DRL's on, when the head/parking lights are on. When you turn on the head/parking lights they either dim or are turned off. That is the case with OEM DRL's as well as with aftermarket DRL's. I ordered a set of Philips Daylightguide DRL's yesterday. Philips - LED DayLightGuide Daytime Running Light LED solutions DRL 12V 6W - 12825WLEDX1 - DayLight - Car lights - Lighting They dim when you turn on the head/parking lights. Like the DRL 5 and 8 I think....only the DRL 4 doesn't dim, but is switched off.
I believe I saw a new plug-in the other night that had the LED DRLs on at night with the headlights. Does anyone know if Toyota has enabled this, possibly by dimming or changing the angle? It could have been a mod, but I can't see that many people doing it, but I would like to have it, just like all those Audis, BMWs and others have... still seems silly to have them shut off when I turn the headlights on. Cheaper than adding some fogs to the base plug-in too.
Would love to see them on your car once fitted, where are you going to have them located ? what length are these ones you ordered ?
I have some pics.....let's see if I can attach them.... They are brighter than what they look like on the pic. What Fong has, is not allowed here. You can have DRL's or parking/marking lights, but not both at the same time. When you turn on your headlights, then you can have dimmed DRL's at the same time, that act as parking/marking lights, but you can't have dimmed DRL's and parking/marking lights at the same time. The dimensions of the Philips DayLightGuides are the same as the Philips DRL 8....
