Water-Repellent Glass Explained

Amazing video.

Now, I'm gonna share to all how I consider to "Properly clean windows."

Before I say so, I'll first use a disclaimer that this procedure includes the usage of a one sided razor blade, so please use caution NOT to get injured.

#1) Use a window type cleaner, spray on surface, Use the coarse side of a micro-fiber cloth to clean the surface.

#2) Use a razor blade to "scrape" the surface, removing any dirt and contaminates that the cloth cannot remove.

#3) Use window type cleaner again, use the coarse side of the micro-fiber cloth again.

#4) Use Rain-X and follow instructions on box.

#5) Use Rain-X and follow instructions, yes again.

#6) Use a light spray of water on the fine side of the micro-fiber cloth and enjoy your new surface. Water will literally "FLY" off the window. Wipers not needed..........almost.

I just purchased a 2012 Lexus CT200H "F". The windshield must have this coating because the rain dances off the window. almost stunning.

 

I used a clay bar on mine and it worked wonders. I couldn't believe how much crud sticks to windows even on a 3 month old car washed every week since purchase.

Same here, I treat all my Prius window with RainX every month, water just drops off the windowshield and side windows, plus its only 4 bucks for a bottle vs god know how much for upgrade to IV or V model.

Also, to make RainX last longer on your car, once you spread that liquid evenly across the window, don't wipe it off, leave it under the sun and let the sun bake it. Your windowshield will look very cloudy at first but once you leave it under the sun for an afternoon, it will become crystal clear and that coating will last longer compare to if you where to just wipe it off.

You can also do double coating and leave it bake under sun, which will definitely make that Rainx last months.

 

Rain X makes a glass cleaner with the repellent in the mix, it works very well. For cleaning the glass, I like to use some 2000 grit wet dry sandpaper every so often to remove contaminants and water spots if there are any.

Are you serious ??? Blow dry your car ??? My car is a transportation tool ...

 

What is so weird about that? I use an electric leaf blower. I suspect that is what he meant too. I blow off most of the water and follow up with a shammy. Saves a lot of time not having to twist the shammy dry repeatedly.
This works great if your car is waxed and RainX'ed. Water comes right off.

 

I guess what I meant is that I never wash the car ... for what ??? Do you wash your local bus/subway or train ??

I do clean the car interior every 3-4 weeks but wash ?? that is just totally wasteful to the environment especially. then blow dry ??? Wow ...

 

Why take a shower everyday, LOL!

The buses here do get washed by the bus company. I try not to go overboard but periodic washing prevents paint damage from crap baking in, and waxing prevents UV damage. You will see that money back in resale value, and environmental benefit in not having to repaint down the road, either by you or the next owner.

 

Sure I wonder myself ... grandparents generation depending on your age it could be great-grandparents seen NO bathroom ... and sure they survived.... daily shower is nice to your coo-workers but not really "essential" strickly speaking .

Sure you wash your car and buses and then what happens next day !!!

How often do you repaint your car ???

And seriously have you ever kept a car long enough to notice paint problems.... most people who blowdry their car get a new one every 3-4 years !!!

 

My last car was a 2002 Camry. White. But the paint started to showed its age. I owned it since new. For the first 3 years of its life, I lived in an apartment and could not garage it or hand wash it, I suspect that most of the paint damage was done early on. I had intended to drive it into the ground, but an uninsured driver sent it to its early grave in June.

 

Excuse me for my language I DID not mean anything personal ... not sure how to put it "in general" ...

I intended to keep my car for long time but hurricane Sandy had other plans .... still no plan to wash it in regular bases. I drive the car everyday ... and see NO point ... it is in a garage when it is not driven ... anyway.

 

No offense taken. I am not here trying to convince you to wash your car. Merely explaining my rationale for doing it.

Everyone's situation is different. If I were married / have kids, I probably would not do it as often as I do today.

Do what you wish, have time for, it is (still) a (mostly) free country!

 

I do the same and have an spectacular finish and faster completion. My efficient leaf blower cost me around 45 bucks at the big orange box

 

I guess I'm OCD, but I can't stand a dirty car. I would be out there now washing the car, but the winds have started to really blow and the temps are falling. I'll wait a couple of days but it won't be easy

And I've always used a leaf blower to remove the excess water. I thought everybody did that?

 

I wash my car once a week and intend to wax it every season. If I'm really busy at work, I might skip a week. This care prevents permanent paint damage by fallout, bird crap and also, because it is the 2nd biggest investment in my life. Also, I love a shiny looking vehicle

People asking me why I wash it so much either don't care about their car or are just plain lazy (ie. women)
