I once paid the exhorbitant price for the upgrade DVD, and I'm determined to never do that again. I've found some used ones but find it very hard and confusing to figure out if it will work for my Prius (a 2005). I've Googled and searched and was surprised that I couldn't find some master wiki tracking all the version or something. Any hints on deciphering this mess and figuring out if a particular version will work for me? Thanks!
I'll probably get slammed for this, but iPhone maps works fine and is updated by apple. Google is good also.
I love the new Google Maps app but I just like using the GPS on my display in the car. It's larger and more convenient to look at while driving.
You will need to know what generation (Gen) version of DVD your 2005 model has. It will likely be either a Gen 5 or Gen 4. My 2010 has a Gen 6 DVD. This is the most important piece of info you need to know because other Gen versions will not work. Next is the gps map upgrade year which is listed by the year and typically .1. The latest will be 12.1 for 2012. Someone with a 2005 will probably chime in and let you know exactly what you need.
You are correct that the vehicle is a Gen 2. But the Nav units also have their own generation designations. I know that my 2010 Nav is a Gen 6. I do not know how far back the Gen 5 Nav goes, ? - 2009.
Correct. The next part of the part number will be the update year. So a 2012 update DVD for your car would have a description something like Gen 4 Rev 12.1.
2005 = Generation 4 for Nav System. If you upgrade the maps you will lose the manual override of the lock-out.
