Hymotion instructions needed

    I have an AEP 2008 Prius that I am working on. Having trouble connecting to the Engine and HV ECU's. It has been converted with a Hymotion L5 Plug-In Conversion. I am looking for some information on how it is installed, so maybe I can take that out of the equation. Then I can concentrate on the factory side. I could always just start dis assembling thing, but I like to know before I tackle it. Any help would be appreciated :)

    And a big HI to all those that have been around here for a long time. It has been a few years since I have frequented PriusChat and hope all are doing well !!

    Isolating the Hymotion system is relatively easy. In the rear of your car on the driver's side are the connections for the Hymotion system. At the main connector you will find a bypass plug that has been tie wrapped near the connection point. Once you have unplugged the Hymotion sytem you must plug in the bypass adapter so the CAN system will continue to have a closed loop of communication. If you merely unplug the Hymotion system the car will not run. Once you have installed the bypass plug into the main Toyota system you will be back to a "stock" Prius. You can the use TIS or some of the other diagnostic tools to solve your issues. Feel free to contact me if you need more detailed info.

    Thanks Pat,

    It sounds like the Hymotion system has a SOC spoofer like a BMSplus or BMS2 which needs to have the CAN connections bypassed to disable the BMSplus with a termination socket. Like shown in the diagrams below.

    Plug in Prius.jpg View attachment 44989 Finally got a chance to check out the system. Here is a pic of what I am looking at. Looks like a harness with an extension, a blank plug attached to the harness ( bottom left ) and a pc serial (?) plug, which is rusted on this one. I assume the blank plug goes into the harness, but before or after the extension? Probably makes no difference.

    Found the other end of the connector. Is this for the Hymotion system ? Or has something to do with the GridPoint box ? Plug in 2.jpg

    Rick,
    Thanks for calling my shop in Wisconsin, EV Powers. Pat's Garage (CA) and I are part of a network of independent shops working with these now-orphaned A123 Hymotion systems. We're glad to help point you in the right direction.

    As you found, with the Hymotion system in the loop, you will not see data via TechStream.

    You were on the right track as far as the blank plug. It's a bypass connector.
    First though, remove the orange service disconnect on the Hymotion system. That'll make things a bit safer back there for you. If the connector is going to be out for a while I highly recommend zip-tying it to a location in the back of the car so it does not get lost!

    You can unplug the Gridpoint pigtail wiring harness and try plugging the bypass connector on there. But in the end you may want to undo that, too, taking the GridPoint harness out of the loop and just attach the bypass connector into the stock Prius harness.

    Once the bypass is installed you should see the normal data through techstream and the car can run indefinitely this way without the Hymotion system in the loop.

    Thanks for your help today,Eric. It was so simple once I knew what I was looking at. Installed the plug and Techstream connected with no problem. Since I had the auxiliary battery disconnected, I found no codes. Took it for a short test drive before leaving work and everything was working normally. Rechecked for codes and nothing yet. Must be something going on in the Hymotion section to be causing problems.

    I really didn't like to see all that rust in the wheelwell.
    Makes me think there could be other moisture issues that area/were in the Hymotion area as well.

    The rust made me uncomfortable as well. The kluged-up harness isn't giving me any warm fuzzies either. Lots of opportunities for problems. Would be interesting to dig into that one.
