First Trip in new PIP = 27mpg (my '11 Prius 2 gets 60+mpg for same trip)

8.3 sounds about right.. my last two fill ups (when the last bar started flashing) have been 8.65 and 8.25.

If the increased battery capacity resides in the spare tire well plus due to change to lithium ion. Why does the PiP have a smaller gas tank than the regular Prius?

 

I believe it has to do with the Evap system. Did you notice that when you hit the fuel door release, you have to wait 'til it says it's ok to pump the gas?

 

I'm not sure but it may be a couple of things. Save on extra weight of gas, also maybe needed the space for battery, between the smaller gas tank and the spare tire, weight saved is about 25 pounds, every bit helps.

 

Never gave that a thought, that needs room to I guess! So many things so little room!

 

I believe I heard the Volt is the same way with the filling procedure.

 

Mom texted me to pick up some home cooked dishes.

25 minutes round trip resulted in 36.9 MPG. So dissapointing.

Darn, you must have been so close to getting home when you ran out EV usb. How many extra miles would you have needed?

 

ICE kicked in 0.9 miles away from home. I used gas the amount about two medium eggs (0.035 gallon).

Coolant warmed up to 132 deg F and ICE shut down when I pulled into garage.

I took the highway and stayed under 55 mph (speed limit). Next time, I will try city route with many lights.

So that's why it's an electric release! I was wondering why the extravagance. I never noticed the message. By the time I swiped my credit card and punched in my zip, it was probably ready. Now it makes more sense. At the risk of going more off topic, why does the PiP have an Evap system?

What is strange, however, is that the regular Prius already has zero evaporative emissions despite using a regular pull-style lever. Not sure what's going on there.

 

I wouldn't count on there definitely being 2.3 gallons (or whatever value you come up with) "in reserve".

In my personal experience (from how far one can go until you run out of gas), the low gas light in all cars comes on when you have ~2 gal of gas remaining

 

I wouldn't try that on a Gen 2 Prius w/its variable capacity bladder and small tank. People have found a large variance in how far they can go on a flashing pip.

 

I think it is quite necessary to have an advnaced evaporative system in the PIP gas tank. Since many of us will drive on EV so often if it had a regular gas tank all the gas might evaporate before we got a chance to use it.
