How to charge @office; no outlet :-(

    I don't think he said the plug at work was a deal breaker. With all the discounts/rebates the PiP is the cost of a Prius Three. That is why I picked one up and I don't have a way to charge at work but the PiP still does pretty good.

    FYI, it didn't occur to me either, because when the sales guy told me the numbers, I raced over there and got the car, considering it was close to what a reglar Prius went for. Not being able to plug in @ work was just not a high priority, and while I would really think about it next time, I have no regrets.

    The building owner had no problem with me plugging in, when I told him it was only about 25 cents per charge. But he wouldn't let me drill a hole through the block wall to install an outlet. He wanted me to use an inconvenient outlet on the other side of the building.

    I instead assembled a piece of Plexiglass, outlet and hook and mounted and weather-stripped it in my office window where I park. He hasn't complained.

    I told my manager that my battery's low all the time and he said it's ok to charge it. :D

    since i got my L2 at home, i've been hanging an extension cord out my office window and charging at work. now i'm back to round trip commute ev only.(y)

    Just for clarity, the Volt would use less gas than a PiP for 50-100 mile trips, as well as do the entire 23 mile round trip, and perhaps even 42 mile round trip, on EV, including cabin heating, with a single overnight charge.

    did i not phrase that correctly?:oops: i was only charging at home and making the 15 mile r/t in all ev. then, with the cooler weather, i couldn't make it in ev all the way and had to use the ice for a mile or two. now that i have the L2 at home, i keep the stock evse in the car and charge at work so i can make home all ev.

    50 - 100 mile trips, each way. There are also annual road trips of 1,500 - 3,000 miles.I don't think the Volt is going to be better. You can't charge everywhere you go, or even most places for that matter. On those 100 - 200 mile trips I'm going to get 35 EV miles and 65 - 165 miles ICE, or 1.75 to 4.5 gallons for a combined 45 - 57 MPG . The PiP will make the same trip using 15 EV miles and 85 - 185 miles ICE, or 1.5 to 3.36 gallons for a combined 55 - 57. The Volt at its best is barely with the PiP at its worst.

    Plus, the Volt costs way more.

    yes, 50-100 mile trips each way.

    at 100 miles:

    PiP: 13 miles EV + [100 - 13 = 87], 87/49 (epa hwy mpg) = 1.77 g.
    Volt: 38 miles EV + [100 - -38 = 62], 62/40 (epa hwy mpg) = 1.55g

    at 200 miles:

    PiP: 13 miles EV + [200 - 13 = 187], 187/49 = 3.82g
    Volt: 38 miles EV + [200 - 38 = 162], 162/40 = 4.05g

    If you want to use the better PiP EV and MPG numbers instead of EPA, then plug in 50 EV and 46 MPG highway for the Volt.

    after tax credits and dealer incentives the Volt seems to cost about 10% more than the PiP rather than "way more". $25k versus $27k in some states like CA. as bisco points out, the PiP seats five and the Volt seats four.

    you would probably save enough gasoline on your 42 mile daily commutes to still come out ahead on those occasional 1,500-3,000 mile journeys.

    and correcting a little bit of misinformation. :)

    The fastest path to get a charging opportunity at the office is to get a senior manager talked into an EV. A Tesla, Volt, PiP, Fiskar, Smart EV, whatever.
