Sent my EVSE cordset in for 240v upgrade yesterday. Charged at work as usual from the ChargePoint station- exhausted my EV battery after 10mi or so on my 28mi commute home.
No way to recharge at home now since my OEM Toyota EVSE cordset is en-route to CA :(

So I started my 28 mile commute to work from my driveway this morning with zero EV range. As soon as I left the driveway the ICE fired up as expected. MPG started out in the 30ish range, then 40's and by the time I got to work- I was at 54mpg! The temp here this morning was 37deg, but I do grille block and over-inflate to 40/40psi so I guess that all helped in attaining that good mpg figure.
FWIW- with a full recharge I usually get 88+mpg on my 28mi trip to work.

What an amazing vehicle Toyota has produced...

After using up my EV range earlier today, I went out again and ran in-town errands with three stops/shut-downs. Total of about 14 miles, and averaged 60 mpg. I too agree about this amazing vehicle from Toyota. :)

It is amazing how efficient PiP is with either fuel and yet retain the interior volume. I love it.

ny_rob I did the same thing a few months ago. You will love the upgraded speed of the 240v cordset. So much nicer to come home from work charge for 30 or 45 minutes and get back out on the road to do errands, go to the gym….

Yeah, Saturday's are tight with errands usually book-ended or close to book-ended. I usually get about an hour or more between runs- but last Saturday at one point I was only able to charge up for 30min between runs- that only added about 1.6mi to my EV range.
I never ran out of EV power yet on the weekend- but have arrived home with only 0.1mi EV range left due to the short time between two runs. The EVSE upgrade should completely relieve the pressure...

PS- today starting from home w/zero EV range I again reached 54mpg at the end of my 28mi commute to work. It was 36deg here this morning...

I couldn't justify the cost of the upgrade. For the few times I would do multiple charges in a day, it would take me WAY too long to recoop the $300.

Now, I would like to have a second cable ;)

I'll most likely never recoup the $300 either- but that's not why I upgraded the charge cable- One of the main factors in purchasing the PIP was the prospect of being able to go from Friday night right through to Monday morning without using any gasoline. This upgrade will help me reach that goal...

How accurate is the reading of MPG that shows on the screen between 'P' to 'P'? I feel that it is all approximation. Anyone who has done a whole tank without charging? If so, what is the MPG they got? I feel it may not be much different than the regular prius.

Haven't gone through a full tank without charging yet, but have done plenty of HV only trips, and I seem to get about 63 mpg most of the time. My '04 and '06 both averaged 54.5, so I would say that is a major improvement.

on my gen III prius the MPG estimate is about 6-10% off as calculated by miles driven/gallons added at the gas station.

    I assume PIP is same

You're certainly in the ballpark. My 54.5 was lifetime calculated, whereas the 63 was off the computer after a trip using primarily HV. In the first 5K on the PiP, calculated was approximately 6.5% lower- 74.8 vs 80 mpg, EV and HV combined, 25/75. Still, using that percentage, I would get about 59 actual from the 63 indicated.

My Gen III 2012 Five was off by about 4% (car would indicate 50.5mpg at the end of a tank, actual gas pumped calculated to 48.5mpg) regarding indicated mpg vs filled gallons at the pump.

Hopefully I won't ever have occasion where I go 2 weeks+ without recharging the PIP...:(

FWIW- it was 26deg here this morning, I ran my 28mi commute in HV only due to not having my EVSE cord available for charging- I again got 54mpg (indicated) at the end of my trip.

When I took off this morning in the opposite direction from you (west), it was 28* and I only got 49 mpg (indicated). This has been my worst morning commute mpg so far. Also, there was less traffic in the HOV than usual, so this probably pushed down my mpg. Your 54 mpg this morning is probably better than you would have gotten with your old Prius HB

Lately, starting out at 36*, I've been getting around mid 50s mpg in the morning. Coming home is a different story. I take the SSP, which has less hills and I have still been able to get around 60 mpg. It also warmer on the commute home.

Keep the stats coming, it will be interesting to see how you do on straight HV.

There's no doubt that the Base PIP w/15" wheels gets better mpg than my 2012 Five got with the stock 17" wheels.
I was lucky to get 54-55mpg on the way to work during the summer in the Five, the PIP (with no EV assist) gets that mpg even with the temps at or below freezing. The ride is also much nicer w/the 15" wheels- not so harsh...

Well, three morning commutes to work- each morning I've got 54mpg at the end of the trip with just HV mode.

my mom has never charged the car since taking delivery in March. I'll take a look at her lifetime MPG when I'm down in LA for the holidays.

On a 430 miles one way trip, the read-out said the car got 61mpg, and it was loaded to the hilt. While down there, the car got 55mpg, going up and down the hills where my brother lives. On the way back, with strong winds all the way, the car got 56mpg.

That seems to be on par with what I've been getting with no ability to charge before my morning commute.
Today it was about 36deg again- got the same 54mpg I've gotten the three previous mornings. Just for experimentation I ran in "Power" mode the whole (28mi) commute this morning- it didn't alter my mpg at the end of the trip.

Just paying a little more attention than usual, I found that on a closed-loop, 168 mile trip yesterday without any EV estimated range remaining from the start, the car showed 79 mpg on the first half, averaging 43 mph in moderate traffic, with a few slow spots, not getting much over 60 mph for any distance. On the second half, traffic was heavier and I only managed to average 37 mph, a lot of stop-and-go, and the mileage dropped to 59. However, the last third or so of the return I got free of the traffic and kicked it up to 70 for a good stretch. Using my estimated indicated-to-calculated difference of 6.4% the averages drop to about 74 and 55 mpg.
