Full Charge Decline

    I get about 9.5 miles and don't run the A/C either. I figure all the hills in my San Diego neighborhood are the reason for the low EV estimate. I started watching the EV estimate as I drive up and down the hills. I might gain +.2 mile with the transmission in "B" when going down a hill, and I'll lose 0.4 or 0.5 mile when going back up the same hill with the transmission in "D".

    We purchased the PIP in August. First few complete charges were showing 12.5 with a full charge. I have been nioticing a drop in charge capacity and as of yesterday, I am showing 9.2 miles when unplugging the charger. I am driving in Long Beach w/o A/c on flat roads and the range capacity is clocking true, but the actual charge has diminished. I know it's only a mile off, but that is a 10% loss of range.

    I have found that my estimated range slowly drops to around 14.3 if I do in-town EV driving only for a few days. But throw in a run on the freeway and use a combination of EV/HV, and the estimated range goes back up, to as high as 15.1 following a charge.

    Just curious what was the increase per month in your electric bill. My Toyota dealer said about $20 to $30 per month if you use off-peak.

    Wonder if cooler weather has any impact although you are in So California.

    Not sure about the SoCal weather- We park in a structure during the day and crack rear window when parked out on hot days.

    I think it would have to be below 35 degrees F to impact the battery.

    mined dropped as soon as the weather dipped into the 60's.

    there's really no answer to that. it's based on how much you charge at home and how much you pay for a kwh of electricity.

    If you haven't already done so, contact your electric utility to see what rate plans they offer for plug-ins. SC Edison has an online form to use to get an analysis of your use, which will aid in deciding which plan works best for you. One thing to be wary of is if installing a separate meter is suggested. Edison offers the meter "free" but depending on what you need in the way of a panel to accomodate it, an electrician's charges can get pretty high, $2000 in my case. It costs me approximately $11 per month to charge every night, but as bisco said, your costs may vary.;)

    With one depletion and charge per day plugged into hone 220v based on 31 day month if that helps. Just looking for a ball park. Dealer is saying a buck a day I have heard about 30 cent a day. If you know for you that would help

    I was showing 15.9 many times back in September (My PIP's record as shown on my Avatar) and now it is back down to @13.9 to 14.2. Gotta be the colder weather, the distance traveled on Electric remains the same or slightly better actually.

    31 charges ~ 100 kwh X .10/kwh = $10. my cost is $.16/kwh so $16. if you look at your electric bill, you can ballpark it.

    I live in LA and have LADWP. It was not cost efficient to try and take advantage of their rebate plan because my electric meter is so far away from my garage. So I decided to convert our whole house from a standard meter to a Time of Use (TOU) meter. I try to limit electrical usage from 1-5p but clearly some things are always going to run (fridge, etc). I do receive a lower night time electric rate for charging the car but I pay more for WHEN I use the electricity vs just how much I use. I don't usually need a full charge every day so I'm not fully charging as others may. That said, I seriously have noticed MAYBE a $5-10 increase in our power bills (which are charged in two month increments) so to me it seems like the cost is pretty negligible.

    One more thing, my estimated range per charge in the beginning was over 12 miles and then dropped to 10.8 and is now hovering just above 10. I drive about 6-7 miles a day round trip to work so if I don't have any extra-curricular activities, you can see that my estimated range is very limited. For two weeks I was on jury duty in downtown LA and I was able to charge from a parking garage outlet each day. I noticed a slight increase in my range during that time because of the additional distance. It's fascinating to me that the LESS I drive, the worse the PIP does. It was the same thing with my MPG on my regular Prius that topped out at about 41 miles per gallon. :( Still better than paying for gas! Right now my car has about 4,000 miles on it and my overall MPG is 100 although my current tank of gas is around 150 MPG!

    So you have a choice about getting a smart meter with LADWP? Here in the SF Bay Area, PG&E is installing smart meters for everyone unless you opt out (that nasty radiation from the radio transmitters in them :rolleyes: ). And last I heard, there was a surcharge for not accepting the smart meter, presumably due the added cost for a manual meter read. This is independent of whether you have a TOU rate plan.
