Made it 482 miles, the low fuel was flashing for the last 20 of it and mileage to empty was showing 0 for the last few miles. Will attempt again
9.5 gallons. I believe my display was showing 54.2, I calculated it to be 50.7. My wife drove it for the first 220 miles of that tank and when I got into it it said 47.2mpg yesterday morning. By the end of the day, the portion I put on (262 miles) I had the computer at 61.2 - it was 95% hwy.
I realize that. I started another thread in this forum about a better way to determine DTE (Distance To Empty), which is to multiply your displayed value by 10. If you had a normal fillup, when you hit that value, you should have about 1.4 gallons of gas left in the tank, assuming an 11.9 gallon tank. Thus a 61.2 mpg display would mean that at 612 miles, if you stopped to fill up, you'd put in about 10.5 gallons (+/- 0.2 gallons). It will take you well past the DTE = 0, but won't run you out of gas. If you like the adrenaline rush of it all, 11x displayed will take you to about 0.25 gallons or less. It is a lot closer to a true DTE value....but there are so many variables that I wouldn't use it as an accurate and precise value.
To clarify, if your displayed value for the entire tank was 61.2 mpg, you'd make 600 miles easy. At your displayed 54.2 mpg, I would say that you'd make 542 miles without a hitch. You might have been able to make 600 miles, especially if you maintained your 61.2 mpg values, but you'd be on fumes (or run out of gas!).
Here is how I got to my 600 mile tank earlier this year (from fuelly): Date Miles Gal MPG 9/11/12 606.0 10.75 56.4 My Cons. display said 59.4 mpg and my avg MPH was 35. I still had over a gallon to go!
Another data point and it further supports the 10x display = ~ 10.5 gallons. 10x display = 594 miles. You went an extra 12 miles @ average 56.4 mpg = 0.21 gallons, Thus 10x fill up would have been (approximately) 10.75 - 0.21 gallons = 10.56 10.54 or 10.6 10.5 gallons. Thanks jsfabb!
I'm trying on this tank. I google mapped my trips for today and tomorrow and they equal to 477 miles. I drove 207 today and the computer is showing 57mpg. I typically do a little better in my second half of a tank, I think because there is less weight to haul since there isn't as much fuel in the car. Either way, I will make it on the list this month sometime! I drive 90% freeway so I'm very happy with my fuel economy so far with this car.
My highest was on a 80° day last month, 130 mile drive home and computer showed 69.4! Wish I could get that every day.
You are only talking about 42 lbs at the most for a half tank of gas, so I don't think that makes much of a difference. I think you just concentrate more on the second half, because you want to end up with a good mpg before you have to fill up.
42 pounds can make a lot of difference for a hypermiler, or anyone for that matter. Why do you think these car companies work so hard on shedding pounds on these sort of vehicles?
I am an engineer and realize they strive to cut weight, but when you say a lot of difference, how much are you talking about? How much do you think an extra 42 lbs will make on your mpg for a tank?
Ya maybe. Just a total guess obviously. Maybe a little higher though, something like 55-70 pounds. I'm sure the math is pretty complicated and obviously not linear.
All this talk about weight... maybe I should go on a diet to increase my MPG's. I weigh in at a whopping 205 pounds haha. That definitely hurts my MPG's.
