It is solved. My PiP jumped up to 14.4 from 13.1 on Monday. This was mixed HV and EV, but I had a ton of regen coming down a large mountain.

You get 16 miles on a 2.7 kWh charge.

That's 170 Wh/mi. For the same amount of electricity your PiP takes to travel a mile, you can light up a 170 Watts light bulb for an hour.

Since PiP headlights use 110 Watts, you can use it for 1.55 hours (93 minutes) in exchange for your one EV mile.

Yup. On the other hand, if you had mostly uphill in EV mode yesterday, the car will report lower range on a full charge today.

great info, thank you. can i assume then, that coming home from my commute (15 min.) cost me 1/6 of a mile and the other 2-2.5 miles lost must be due to drop in temps from 70's to 60's, and changing my halogens to led's isn't going to help much?

Yea, the energy that the headlight consume is probably a fraction of what the other elements can do.

Rolling resistance increase (tire pressure), head wind (cold air is more dense), driving speed (A BIG one - at 55 mph, half the energy spent is pushing through air), battery chemistry due to low temp, etc.

If I assume your round trip is 16 miles and your commute is 15 mins, you must be doing 64 mph. Perhaps your commute is 30 mins round trip so you average 32 mph?

Then your headlights will cost you 1/3 of a mile. :) The slower you go, the more it'll cut into the range. Say, you average 1 mph. Then the headlight will use 110 Wh/mi on top of your current 170 Wh/mi.

Driving with lights on is pretty much all the time during the cold season, since it's quite often gray & gloomy during the day. The advanced package has great LED lights for that, nicely shown in this photo:

Have an idea what their power consumption would be?

my HIDs are 35w each, but they are soooo much brighter. win win.

I agree with charging battery just prior to driving it in winter, to pre warm it. Seems to help.

But in the end, winter temps have dropped my EV range .6 miles too. I went from 14.2 summer to now 13.6, but I have been driving faster this month too on a new route.

how many watts do the stereo and speakers draw?

NPR could cost you .5 ev miles
Aerosmith might cost 2 ev miles :)

my commuteis 7.5 mi each way =15 miles and 15-20 min. each way depending on traffic = 30 - 40 minutes. average speed around 28 mph. when i first noticed significantly reduced ev travel, the temp had dropped from the high 60's, low 70's. to high 50's, low 60's. the first night i had to use my headlamps on the way home from work, i didn't make it home before the charge ran out. it was the first time since april 26 when i got the car that i couldn't make the commute in ev. tonite, i drove to work in a nor'easter. needless to say, i only got about 10 miles of ev.

Yesterday, I drove about 2 hours during the nor'easter snow storm with a full charge and got 50 MPG. That seems to be the worst possible condition/scenario for PiP.

This morning, a full charge was showing 11.6 miles (was 13.7 miles). I am sure it'll return back to usual.

I always thought 50mpg was awesome, but the PiP made it even worse now, I almost get depressed when I get below 70 mpg ;) I bought driving gloves JUST so I don't have to run the heaters, it's a disease ...

I used Meguiars Glass cleaner to REALLY clean the glass (started by doing half the glass, so I could see the difference), so now I have no need for the defroster for the first 10 miles or so while I am on EV. Without the cleaner, I would be flying blind!

Yea it works well. I am hoping it will last a month or so before it starts fogging up again. But you need to do a really good job cleaning for sure.

I don't drive enough to deplete it so I don't know -- until I take longer trip.
