Terry - Great job and thanks for the info. I converted your Word document to an Adobe file reducing the file size for the dial-up challenged.

Thanks but I think this thread 'concerned' the install of a reverse camera where none existed before?

I have a UK Spec T-Spirit which lacks a reverse camera. I'd like to know if I can simply buy and install the camera unit to enable it.

So, how did this thread end? Can we install a camera and use it on the stock MFD? Is the wiring already in the rear hatch to plug the camera in to? Can this be done to the 2005 model?

In the 2007 model, the wire harness is not there, so you'll have to install it yourself. But, in your case, you need a video converter, not only the camera (read the forum, I don't know exactly).

Prius 2004-2005 needs this video converter, while 2006-2010 needs only the camera, because has already the NTSC video input. See attached doc for more info.

    Hey ;)

Does anyone know where to get the harness? Is it connected to the normal harness? Are there connection points somewhere? Do I have to put a new cable from the front unit to the hatch?

    Every bit helps.

    Thanks,

    ingo...

I've managed to install my rear view camera, with the all-time-reverse hack using one ON-OFF button. See pictures in attach, the camera was bought from a salvage from US, I've paid on it 130USD.

The connectors for MFD were used from an affected CD-ROM cable, used inside a PC..

    Hello everybody,

I just bought this camera SONY CCD Car Rear View Camera For Toyota Prius 06-10/ Camry 09 10/ Aurion 06-11 | eBay[IMG]) from ebay.
I conected the 2 power wires to the rear lights (to power-up the camera), and pull the other wire (RCA) till near the MFD. How I can connect this wire to the MFD? no RCA female on the back of the MFD.
The car is Prius Gen.II, 2008, executive with navigation.

    Thank you!

You have to connect the composite video to the MFD through a dedicated pin. You can find this information on the forum. Also, you don't have any RCA connector inside the car, without installing yourself one.

    Need help!

I bought OEM backup camera for my prius which was really inexpensive. The seller mentioned that it is wireless and can be installed in 2005 Prius models. This is the info:

    Wireless Sony CCD Car Rear View Camera for 1 3 5 Series x3 x5 x6 E39 E82 M3 E46 | eBay[IMG]

I understood how to install the rear part. However, I did not got the reciever connections part like:
-how to connect the wireless module (reciever) to the car monitor...(yellow plug -AV input)
-and ...the wireless module (reciever) to the car battery or the backup light power supply or the cigarette lighter (red +ve and balck -ve).

Please provide some light as I have no idea how to open and what to start opening.

    Thanks

Have you (or anyone else) made any progress on this?

I'm trying to do the same thing with a Canadian 2007 Gen II Prius without navigation. I have the camera connected to the rear lights and ran a cable into the dash behind the MFD, but I haven't been able to figure out where to plug in the wire(s) to get it to display on the screen.

I've also confirmed that the camera is not a dud, since it works if I connect it to an external display.

Does anyone know where I can find a pinout/wiring diagram for the 2007-2009 MFD without nav? Perhaps that might help us to figure it out.

How did you open the back panel of the car to install the camera (the special hole)? can you please describe me . Also, where did you connect the two wires to get the power for the camera? Is it the license plate light or the backup light and how? Please let me know. Also, what stuffs you use to open the back panel and from where you started.

    Sorry about the late reply.

The back panel itself is really easy to open, you just pull on the panel using your hands with the liftgate open and have faith that it will come off without breaking anything. It has lots of clips on it, but they seem to be pretty sturdy as I've taken it off and put it back on many times and never broken one of those clips.

Actually, the special hole for the camera was a little too big for my camera to stay in, so I cut the plastic insert that was covering the hole in place of a camera and made it snug to my backup camera's dimensions. I ran the wire from the camera to the inside by tucking it next to the licence plate light. I used a vampire clamp to get power from the reversing light, as I want to get the camera working as a basic backup camera before I try anything more ambitious that would require it to have power when I am not reversing.

I can try to find some pictures of the process and get them posted if you like.

I've been mostly following instructions from EVnut.com and Coastal Electronics along with keydiver's post in the thread that used to be on PriusChat in "/forums/gen-ii-prius-modifications/14990-backup-camera-activation". I believe the post by keydiver was #8 and it was most helpful with links to other key documents and pages. From EVnut.com, I used the "Prius - Anytime Reverse Video" guide and combined those directions with those Coastal's "prius_camera_installation" Prius Rear View Camera Installation Instructions.

I haven't made much progress since mounting the camera and running the wires to power and the dash, since I still haven't found a pinout or wiring diagram for the no-nav 2007 MFD. The way I mounted the camera certainly looks good enough to seem like it came with the car, and my Toyota dealership agrees since they were fooled by it when I first put it in and spent a little while trying to figure out why the backup camera wasn't turning on and why their notes didn't have anything about the car coming with a backup camera installed before! I really hope to get this figured out, so I hope you're having better luck with it than I have. Please share if you figure it out! :)

Thank you all for the great info, thanks to you I was able to install my reverse camera this week-end. I've tested the camera (eBay CCD from Hong Kong) on the MFD prior to the install and everything worked perfect. After the installation, the camera works intermittently on full color (usually right after I power up the car and put it in reverse to exit the parking) and most of the time just black and white.
Tested the power/grounding of the camera from the backup light, left side, everything is ok. The connections in the MFD are also fine, the only difference from the testing phase is that I had to extend the video cable with about 5 feet, as the RCA cable provided by the eBay seller was shorter than needed. Not having available a shielded video cable, I've used a double audio cable from a hi-fi system.
Could it be that the problems I have with the camera originate from the 5 feet non shielded cable? I'm thinking that the reason the camera works ok when I first power up the car is because the cable is still "clean", with no/low EMI (electro-magnetic interference), especially that the video cable runs inside the instrument panel and the Prius having a slightly higher magnetic influence than classic cars.
I'll change the 5 feet section of the cable with a proper shielded cable and will also replace the connections to the MFD, to be sure.
