I am talking about during rush hour. When the ave speed is ~60-70 , you get people trying to go much faster and don't seem to look ahead at all. They seem to love running right up to your bumper and then slamming on the brakes. As a result of the second car slowing down, the car behind that has to slow down more. And the car behind that has to slow down even more, creating a “backward travelling wave” of slower and slower traffic. And that’s how you get a traffic jam and that’s how, somewhere down that wave, cars may have to stop altogether.

True! You just wanted to know what kind of mileage to expect when driving 80-85 mph. I think a few people were misled into thinking your inquiry meant that when driving at that high of a speed you not only would be speeding but also driving aggressively. For my part, I thought your question was simply about the hit on fuel economy for driving at a ridiculously hgh rate of speed.

If only the lane that granny drives on is right lane on a two+ lane road, also that report I read long ago, the averaeg of bumper to bumper accident was 30s mph. A handsfree call to 911 seems to work well. Have the mile marker or exit number and direction of travel ready.
No way, troopers would care about those stuff? Or maybe by the time they arrive, either you or that boulder have exited, I don't think you can do much except for just watching everyone go in daisy chain.
I have only called a few times but it seemed to work very well, within just a few miles when I was able to report the mile marker. A retired trooper told me that they take such reports with priority as many of the offenders turn out to be impaired or transporting contraband.
I'll make sure to keep that in mind, but I kind of hate using cell phones while driving, I prefer to listen to my music
A Prius will go 85 mph? I will never know. The purpose for my buying a new Prius for my daily driver was to save money, not beat it to death.
The purpose of me buying my Prius was to save on gas consumption and beat it to death. I admit it. I will drive my car hard and for as long as I can keep it on the road. I know the OP didn't ask this question either, but it appears to me that when driving at about 75MPH, it doesn't feel like the car is struggling at all (I don't know whether that is factually correct), so I don't think I'm beating up my car at that speed. But when I start pushing 80-85MPH, those hills make the car a little sluggish, so I slow down a little. And again, this is on the I5 in the middle of nowhere. It's hard driving that fast anywhere else (for me). But now I wonder what speeds you all travel on I5. It's posted at 70MPH speed limit. From experience, I don't think many people can say they drive under that speed. Mike
I go with the flow when I travel the country. When I am in your state I keep it moving Prius does just fine whether single digit speeds or triple digit speeds. Mike
I think they start charging November 11. I may try to drive it this weekend. I wonder what I get with my cruise control at 88mph. Wil the flux capacitor work.
I can do any speed 80mph - 90mph safely. Round trip is 80 miles. I only want to test one speed though.
