So what is your plan for people who are currently suffering in NY? What should they have done? Please make sure your suggestion work in that population density.

Aiding our neighbors in times of emergency is called "civilization", no ugliness there at all.

Whatever works for electric power backup. Perhaps something good can come out of this mess for the next time where ever it happens. When police, fire crews and repair crews can not get fuel to do their job, something needs to be done.

I think that falls into the category of what gives the government the right to make requirements of private businesses?
Who is going to pay for it?

Personally, I don't care as I so rarely use them anymore.
Of course, you could also require people to not buy personal vehicles that get less than 40, or 50 mpg. That would alleviate the supply side of the equation.

lots of people helping. government, charities, private citizens, power company workers from all over the country. i don't know how much more can be done. it's a natural disaster of epic proportions, and while many are still suffering, overall, a tremendous work is being done. my daughters company sent everyone home to do volunteer work. they have been carrying meals and supplies up the stairs of high rise residences to elderly people who cannot negotiate thier way down in the dark or would not be able to reclimb as much as 20 stories and more.

Why would you blame your car for the political opinions of someone on the Internet?

I was hoping there was another option rather than that you were completely irrational. Oh well.

One of the things that was discovered in NJ was that apparently a slew of stations does not even have the capability of being hooked up to generator power in case of a power outage. The ones that DO have that ability have apparently been hooked up to generators by the national guard.
Can we stop with the politics? Completely irrelevant here.
Speaking of personal responsibility, everyone in this thread driving a fuel-efficient vehicle can pat themselves on the back for not contributing to the problem.

    T. Boone Pickens was on CNBC yesterday commenting about how there really isn't a shortage of fuel (output from refineries and available supplies), but the real problem is lack of electricity. He cited a bunch of output numbers (that I don't remember OTOH). The question of generators at gas stations came up and his reply was along the lines of "How often does this happen?" I'm guessing this problem does NOT frequently happen in NY/NJ.

Agreed, let's keep politics out of this thread.

I donated a bunch of $ to the Red Cross over the past few days for disaster relief.

United Airlines is offering some MileagePlus miles for donating (Help Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts Now | Fundraising Event on Crowdrise). Hilton is giving points for donating (GlobalGiving - Donate: Hilton HHonors disaster relief efforts). The Weather Company is matching donations to the Red Cross (TWC to Match Sandy Donations - weather.com). I'm sure there are many others...

i think it depends on the region. in NJ, the problem is primarily electricity. in NY, the problem is actually supply, since electricity is up in most parts of the city.
one thing that was problematic was that the ports were closed in the last couple of days due to debris and inspections. they finally opened today. another issue was that some kind of transport ships were banned from transporting fuel between US ports, a restriction that was waived due to the crisis.

If you lived closer, I would meet you somewhere and bring some gas. But I'm in Syracuse, and I'm sure you can find gas much closer than that (if not, PM me). Good luck, message me if there is anything I can do (this offer is obviously open to anyone), and hang in there!

Beats me, but I hope some of them see the light. As I posted at Hurricane Sandy | PriusChat a few days ago.
The Hummer H2, if you didn't know, weighs 6400+ lbs (more than 2x the weight of a Gen 3 Prius). 11 miles per US gallon should be ~21.3 liters per 100 km. 9 mpg is ~26.1 L/100 km.
