No doubt reliability and satisfaction correlate -- most of the time, and more so with Japanese sources than other brands. Yet it is easy to find many examples where this breaks down; just look at cars that have a reputation for being bought for reasons other than reliability. So called 'performance' cars, German sourced cars, the mini, or sports cars are obvious examples. The owners report the problems, and like them anyway.

I think you should look up the CR data from the question "would you buy this car again?" for some insight. Don't take it too seriously though; Merkins have the memories of mullusks. Unless they are stranded, or the problem is not taken care of easily and quickly. Then watch out.

yes, thats why BMW/MB/Audi are not worst rated :).

As I said before, in CR survey, people rate how big their car problems were, not just how many they got.

I find it hard to believe that someone rated their car as worst car on the planet and then get it again - I am sure there would be some, but customer loyalty will be down regardless.

However Germans are not rated the worst in this case :). They are mid pack and Audi is doing good in CR, between Acura and Infiniti.

Re: the German models -- true for 2012, but go back a few years. Poor reported reliability, but high satisfaction.

Only in the articles, the website gave no details. My comments are in respect to this initial reliability survey. The CR spokesman said that the fusion and escape were not included because there was a new model 2013, so the 2012 data was not used. He also said that sync and power shift on the explorer and focus were the reason for the drops, these are new systems. The methodology I was reporting was reported in from 2010, they could have changed it. I doubt a 2008 truck is surveyed and only compared to new cars, that would make the whole thing invalid. Ford would have also scored much higher. I don't really like these initial quality or initial reliability surveys. The reviewers can find the problems in things like sync and power shift. It takes years for the real quality problems to show up.

Ah, so you are somehow creeped or offended by some of my devils advocate positions on some of the far reaching predictions on climate change. I don't like the term denier. Nor do I think anyone in the environmental movement would call me one. I just don't like it being used on other. I have advocated for a long time for my companies to reduce pollution, and have worked very hard getting wind power adopted and built. I don't know how that has anything to do with an initial reliability survey.

Agreed, the HSD has quite a legacy in durability, dependability, and quality. This system ca't be beat. I am very impressed with the research and design Toyota has put into the Prius. The Prius has, without any question, set the standard with other manufacturers have tried to imitate. Like the saying goes "imitation is the best form of flattery". How true that is with the HSD system.
