The idea is that my money, taken from wherever I have been keeping it, and applied to a payment intead of taking out a loan "gains" me a savings rate equivalent to the interest rate I would otherwise pay. AND, I don't pay tax on the proceeds.

 

I am well aware that the Prius stands on it's own merits in terms of personal finance. Simple arithmetic shows it, and I obviously have no argument with you saying the same thing.

HOWEVER, since the Prius is also the most environmental choice, the personal finance gain is not causing additional community harm compared to an alternative that, as I posted above, DOES impact everyone personally.

Let me phrase it this way: if two cars have exactly the same personal finance cost but if car (A) also causes less environmental damage, less damage to the economy, and less support of anti-american regimes, it is a NO BRAINER to pick car (A). America would be so much better off if it could collectively grasp this simple idea.

 

Yes, nobody can argue with that. You would have to be a complete twat not to go with car (A) in that situation.

Alas, I'm a typical Prius owner - I like to save money on my 90+ mile commute. My politics and private life have no impact on my vehicle choice.

How many years did you spend adding to the FUD and hate of Prius out of political baggage, cultural bias, and technological ignorance ?

 

NRA stickers work better but they don't call them "excuses" for nothing. And the good news is by the end of Obama's second term you might actually break even on the Prius and start saving money.
