Electricity Cost vs MPG

    There was more money to be made refining ICE's.

    How about hybrids back in the early part of the last century? Jay Leno has one, as does the Nethercutt Museum near Los Angeles. In fact, they have two, one complete and one rolling chassis, so that you can see how it works. They were called Owen Magnetics, and required no shifting, and had regenerative capabilities as well. Problem was, according to Leno, at the time his was built, in 1916, a Cadillac sold for about $2000, but an Owens Magnetic went for upwards of $3700. They lasted until 1922, having built about 700 cars. Hmmm, paying a premium for a hybrid....... go figure. :)

    I was hoping someone can check my math. I added up all the per kWh charges on my electric bill and I calculate it's 18 cents a kWh. This includes generation, transmission, distribution, Non-bypassable FMCC, etc

    From reading the forum threads the consensus seems to be 3kWh to charge the PiP. Assuming 12 miles per charge and that in gas mode I should get 50mpg, I calculated that the equivalent of 5ompg in electric would be 2.25 an "electric gallon".

    Does that make sense?

    Yes thats right depending on the numbers you choose for miles/kwh. Department of energy says 3.44 but if you check your EV ratio just divide EV miles and Kwh to get your average. I get more like 4.1

    There is a loss during charging, its only 85% efficient. Charging the pack takes about 3kw.. but only yields 2.4kWh of usable power. So you cannot take EV miles / car reported Kwh (as that does not icnlude the loss from charging).

    Ok thanks. That makes sense. So I'll keep using 3.44

    Also unsure if regenerated watts are added to car reported kilowatts, or just ones from charge.

    imagine where we would be today if we had actually learned something from our wake up call 39 years ago
    imagine where we would have been had Jimmy Carter been re-elected for a 2nd term or if Al Gore would have won the Presidential Election (for the 3rd time!) in 2000.

    there is a lot of things to imagine. we have seen the writing on the wall for decades. we have been warned for decades.

    Just the kWh from charging, regen is not counted as kWh, but it does help you achieve greater range and better HV MPG.

    You can take EV miles / 3.0kWh if you used a full charge or EV miles/ (kWh used / .85)) for partial charges
