Proposed rule change on the record tank list. Allow people to add exactly 1.00 gallons towards the end of their run, but make them report the gallons of the fill-up and require the fill-up to be less than 10.9 gallons. Just so we don't pull gunk into engine if there is any crud at the bottom of the tank. Current progress: 565 miles at 71.6 mpg, 2 bars remaining, but they are stale bars and the battery has 2 bars of charge. I should be able to hit a 700 mile tank, but will be running on fumes for part of it.
At your current rate, I wouldn't expect you to get the flashing bar until you hit 600 - 620 miles on this tank (thus I don't think your 2 bars are stale). At this rate, you should have zero issues reaching 700 miles on this tank, assuming you had a normal fill up on your last fill up. I would estimate that you could get close to 780 miles (71.6 x 11) until you would be on fumes.
Mozdzen, You are doing great! You will easily hit 700 miles unless you suddenly feel the need to drive the car like a bat out of hell over the next 100 miles. If your CONS. value was a bit higher (75 or so) you'd likely be able to get an 800 mile tank out of this, but 700 looks to be easily obtainable. Figure you are getting about 68 mpg with this current tank.
My mpg average for the last 300 miles has been ~75. If I had been driving like that from the start, my overall would have been higher. The worst part of this is a 5 mile stretch on a 65mph highway where I drive 55 mph. Other drivers do get annoyed. If I'm on it during rush hour, I don't stick out like a sore thumb, but when it is not rush hour, I'm tempted to put my flashers on. That is the stressful part of maintaining a 70mpg+ tank. I will go back to driving 65 mph on the freeway when the tank is done. Historically, I've been averaging 55 mpg including highway driving at 80 mph for multi-hour trips. But it is fun and challenging to see just what you can eke out of a Prius.
OK. Finally filled up. Took in 10.3 gallons - had plenty of gas left. 72.3 mpg, 700.7 miles, averaged 28 mph. Filled up on 9/11 - 5 weeks + on the tank. nice warm weather. I was averaging 75 mpg for the last 400 miles. Should have done that from the start and I would have had an 800 mile tank. Average trip was solo with 6 miles highway and 7 miles side streets @ 40 mph. Now I go back to driving more "normal". AC / speed limit / etc.
Why you dirty! You just bumped me down! Congrats! I bet that was a tedious, Nerve-wracking 700 miles.
It is kind of a "bucket list" thing for the Prius. Now if anyone asks, you can say you drove 700 miles on a tank of gas and averaged about 70 mpg doing it. Next summer will be time for the 800 mile tank. Bask in the glory of your accomplishment!
Thanks guys. Yes that was nerve wracking at times. I loved rush hour when it would flow at 30-40 mph. I wouldn't stand out as much. Plus windows up and no AC when it was 100 F outside was not fun. I'm pretty sure I could do an 800 mile tank, but I don't want to at the moment. I sure wish the battery had another KWH in it, or that I could juice it up to full when coming home with 2 bars left. I guess that is what the PiP is for. But with the PiP, I of course wish it had 50% to 100% more range - always wishing for that next enhancement, which Toyota usually delivers every 3 yrs.
I hear ya. That is what makes these accomplishments so rewarding. You know what it took to achieve 700+ miles on a tank. It's not easy. This is sort of like a brotherhood. We've all sweated, cursed and swore through sometimes tortuous hours of hypermiling to get here. I salute you. Now those 800 mile club guys. I don't think they are right in the head.
Impressive tank mozdzen. Could you give me your fuelly name? Since you live in Phoenix I would like to see your tanks this winter as well as next summer to use as a comparison. Mine is inscottsdale I'm trying to get 700 but not sure if I will make it. I will be cutting it real close. I have to somehow put 81 more miles by Tuesday because Wednesday's commute will push my MPG down. Dash is reading @ 67.1. Flashing one bar came on at 583 miles. MTE=0 @ 618.6 Codyroo's 67X11 puts me at 737, not sure how many gallons used for that math. I want to make sure I don't run out of gas.
67 x 11 should leave you with something like 0.25 gallons or less (depending on your previous fill-up). The 10x formula would have you fill up with about 10.4 - 10.5 gallons. If you can maintain your 67.1 mpg, you should be able to make it with about 0.75 gallons to spare. Again, this assumes that you got a full fill up (not a premature shut off) on your last fill up. If you are keeping mpg records and comparing your calculated to your indicated mpgs, you'll have assurance as to the level of your previous fill up. But even still, I think you should make it with a gallon to spare. In previous tanks where I got an indicated 67 mpg, my calculated was 63 - 64 mpg. If we assume 63 mpg * 11.9 gallons = 750 miles, you should have nearly a gallon of gas left.
since when, the first post in this thread doesn't have the 600 mile requirement in it in fact it says Seems like from that wording any submission would be valid. In fact I just reread the entire thread and while there were suggestions for a minimum there was never a consensus on a single number and F8L left it at If you want to avoid the gaming of the system make it a 300 mile minimum or 400 mile if you like. Personally I fill up at 1 or 2 pips remaning so even when I'm getting 60+ MPG I'm filling up at under 500 miles. I could probably stretch a tank to 500 just to see the number but I'm not the only driver of the car and my wife could refill it before I get to 500. But if the limit is 400 I can easily just take a pic every couple of weeks when we hit 400+ and post them as they rise in the fall.
Thanks for the reply. I am off today and did a little unnecessary driving taking different routes to get where I want to go I'm currently at 653 miles with dash reading 67.7 mpg. I always do a full fill up and do not overfill. I always stop at the first click. My last tank was 618.2 with 10.58 gallons, dash reading 62 mpg. Display error % for me ranges from 4.3 to 6.6% optimistic. It's going to be real close.
That's actually very good data and fits (roughly) in the expected range of 10.5 gallons +/0.1 gallons 62 mpg displayed * 10 = 620 miles. Expected fill up 10.5 gallons +/- 0.1 gallon. Actual fill up @ 618 miles = 10.6 gallons. At 67.7, I would expect you will be no more than 10.6 gallons used at 677 miles. The next 23 miles will take less than 0.4 gallons, you should come in 700 miles at 11.0 gallons (estimated calculated mpg = 63.7 mpg). I would guess you've used 10.2 - 10.3 gallons so far.
Tonight I should reach 700. I actually had more than 653 when i posted last. I went out to lunch, took different route going there and coming back. P&G all the way. Have 680 miles - 68.2 mpg display. I will post on Justin's 700 club later tonight...thx again.
It is nerve wracking to push that 700 mile tank. Such a relief when it is done. I just signed up with fuelly name= NGC4565. Good luck. Tom PS - I think the lower limit should be 600 miles. Anyone breaking into the top 20 will have to have at least 60 mpg. If you made it 500 miles, I'd be ok with that too. But under 500 miles is a tough call. 300 miles is too short as you could have everything go your way - hit all the lights, right weather, wind at your back, no short trips, etc. But with 500 miles, you have to deal with some of life's uncertainties, and certainly at 600 miles, you'll get some non-ideal trips averaged in. My 2 cents
