Does this "stacking" actually help the mpg (assuming there is no net elevation change over the measured travel, and the battery ends at the "drained" HV charge level)? I know stacking can manipulate the EV/HV statistics on the car, but the bottom line for most people, I think, is the actual miles per gallon of gasoline for a given trip.

I've learned to kick the ICE on and start its warmup before I get to the Highway. Then I don't use up as much battery on the Highway. I'm then able to get closer to my charging location before the battery runs out and getting higher MPG.

Very good observation. EV "Stacking" allows regen to show up on the EV ratio side, instead of being unaccounted for on the HV ratio side.
I think the longer the drive is that doesn't allow an opportunity to charge, the better EV stacking may be helpful for overall MPG.

yes this is true...anytime i know im driving further then my EV range, I always save a couple EV miles so when you regen/stack ect they go back onto EV side of battery.

I was playing with this some more today, and noticed that while the EV mode recharges pretty quick, it uses it up a lot quicker as well. a flat 300ft stretch @ 30mph would deplete the battery, eventho it says I have 1 mile remaining (recharged from when I had 0.1 mile left). So I'm not sure now if the math works when looking at the complete mpg picture.

Absolutely no need to do that. Drained the battery completely earlier today and at a highway speed downgrade regenerated 1.4 miles of range (which were then completely used up again in HV mode)

the key words there are hwy speed downgrade......around city driving you cannot get EV range back.

We're talking about stacking though, which you can seriously only do in a situation like that. My point was that stacking is possible in any mode and there's no need to "preserve" EV range for it to work

My EV/HV button just beeps when there are no projected EV miles left, so I could not use to stack. It becomes useable only after regenerating about 1 mile of projected EV.

Yes but regen will not stop working just because the battery is full in HV mode, it will keep charging if there's enough power being generated through braking/coasting

Yes, but once your EV/HV button stops working, it takes continuous regeneration of about 1 mile worth of projected EV miles before the button works again. This takes a rather long downhill run. Shorter regeneration periods are used up when HV taps battery for power.

you are not understanding the exact subject here....sure it might work for a long HWY speed downhill section where regen is very big. But for around town it wil never work, and then you are stuck in HV mode not able to change back.

saving a half mile or so of EV range allows much more flexibility and much easier stacking of EV miles back in from regen.

    thanks

What is the point of "stacking", other than to run up impressive EV numbers on the in-car display? I guess I am asking under what circumstances can you do better than the control system on the car to minimize total gasoline usage?
