I wonder why Toyota is cutting price to move these cars, instead of opening up them up to another ten or twenty states.

Volt sales had some sluggishness, and now they're moving well. Maybe it takes time, or maybe the PiP's battery is just too small. There are a lot of 100/250/500 MPG Volt owners. PiP, not so much.

When you open up new states, you need to keep larger inventories, that may not sell. That is what was going on in the volt inventory problems in march. With the longer supply chain, and slow sales the prius phv, the incetives may be the fastest way to get numbers to proper levels. Still there are a few states that are good plug-in states that toyota could add without inventory problems.

All the plug-in vendors need to get their dealer network up, and toyota at least has improved to 1652 this month.

The New 2012-13 Prius plug-ins are just too expensive to justify buying one. I bought my 2010 Prius for $18,000 used with only 10k miles on it (Traded in my truck, so no car payment) Just can't see paying a car payment up to 60 months and expect to recoup your costs. I like getting over 50mpg or more tho with my current Prius!

Well with the current TFS incentives a plug-in is actually cheaper than a regular new Prius.
33–3.5-.5-2.5=26.5, which is basically the price of a Prius Three. Add to this a desperate dealer who just really wants to get these cars off the lot and the 0% financing, and you're looking at a Plug-in which costs less than the equivalent Prius lift back. Kind of ridiculous.

Have you ever thought about short commute ? Able to charge at work?
Does prius do well in very short distances?

simple - because you would complain about your PiP having to be shipped out of state, if it needed warranty work. You can't just poop 52 regions worth of PiP technicians over night unfortunately.

    But pooping is fun!
(also, by this logic, shouldn't they prohibit out of state purchases?)

...PA gets $1000 off extra and you can go to MD to get the car. Another PA person near you has done this.
The place I look at (on the web) is CarMax.com in Laurel MD they sell new Toyotas.

Check out the Sticky on Federal and State Incentives if you want to get the name of the other PA person to see where they got it.

I know, the terms are cheaper now for those who are tier 1 and 1+... I think cars are being refused by other states who didn't have the market for it, and are coming here to CA. There aren't too many 2012's left at this point anyway.

BTW: I also bought mine in early May and am happy to have had a lot more time for the HOV lane use than someone getting one now. Who knew, huh? This car was mandated, had to be shipped, and sold in a certain volume. Period. Right now, with gas at $5 rearing its ugly head in CA, these cars are selling quick as greased lightning. I am pleased that I stocked up well last two allocations!

The reason for the deals is to sell the number of cars required by that state by the end of 2012, in order to avoid huge fines from those states. Sometimes the government can help some people when they get involved.
