The price of gas in 1962 was 31 cents per gallon. Using a CPI calculator to trend that amount forward, 31 cents per gallon works out to $2.19 a gallon in 2009 dollars. A typical 1962 car got 15 MPG. Dividing $2.19 by 15 MPG gives you 14.6 cents per mile in gas cost in 2009 dollars. A typical car today gets 25 MPG and gas costs $3.84 per gallon. That works out to 15.4 cents per mile in 2009 dollars. Prii getting 50 MPG have a cost of 7.8 cents per mile. Nice! Worth mentioning that my mother's 1958 VW got 32 MPG for a CPI adjusted cost of 6.8 cents per mile. Is gas expensive? Yup. Can I do anything about it? Yup - I drive a Prius.

Got gas Monday morning $4.29/gal here- pumped 10.2 gal cost me $44.
The lady across from me was at $98 and still pumping in her Yukon XL Denali and the guy behind me was at $75 and still pumping into his full size Pickup.

Needless to say- lots of long faces- not a good way to start the work week if you own a gas guzzler!

I'll bet that Yukon XL Denali was carrying between 0-3 passengers and/or carrying little or no cargo. Right?

It blows my mind that in my area (where regular is above $4/gallon), not only do I see way too many monstrosity class SUVs, I see numerous current gen/new looking ones.:( Almost all of them are being driven solo or w/minimal passengers and cargo.

    Correct- just the driver!

Would be an interesting experiment if gas hit $6+ per gallon- wonder if some of these SUV drivers would keep it under 75mph on the expressway. For some reason- many SUV and Pickup drivers continue to drive at ridiculous speeds even with gas at near record high prices. What kind of MPG does the Yukon XL Denali get at 75mph?

Don't know, but my wild guess based on Compare Side-by-Side, for a 4WD drive model, maybe 14-16 mpg and maybe 17-19 mpg for a 2WD for a current gen. For a previous gen, from Compare Side-by-Side, maybe subtract 1 to 3 mpg from each of the above ranges?

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) US Crude Oil rose to its highest bids in a week after US Federal Reserve (Fed) Chairman Jerome Powell noted that the Fed doesn’t see an increased risk of recession in the US economy. WTI quickly reverse course and pulled back down into the $78.50 region, but barrel bids remain in the green on Wednesday after Energy Information Administration (EIA) Crude Oil Stocks Change came in below expectations. This adds to a smaller-than-expected increase in US barrel counts from the American Petroleum Institute (API) late Tuesday.
