That is awesome. Going to try it in the morning! Was waiting until my 5k tire rotation to get the backup beep turned off, and I thought I'd have to wait until then for the unlock too. Now if I could just figure out why the interior does not illuminate when I walk up to the car w/the key fob I would be a happy camper.

I just bought a used 2007 Prius. I didn't know anything about Priuses until I got a cab ride one day.
I asked the taxi driver lots of questions and he pretty much sold me how he did 500,000kms with barely any mechanical work and the car uses half the amount of fuel as other vehicles. I spoke with other taxi drivers and they all praised the Prius. So, 5 days ago I saw a used Prius for sale from a little old lady (lol) and I bought it.
I have a bunch of questions now and so happy I found this forum.
I have learned a lot from the manual like what the 'B' on the stick shift stands for, I hope it's Brake.

    Calgary,

You're partially correct that "B" means Brake, but it doesn't help to stop the car or to lock the car in place when you park it (that's a job for the foot-operated parking brake near your left foot after you place your car in park with the rectangular parking button below the engine start/stop button). Using the "B" (for Brake MODE) position on the shift selector can only be accessed from the Drive mode & only helps to slow the car or to control its' speed while going down a long hill (so you don't have to keep using the regular brake pedal as much) by using a more aggressive form of regenerative braking. It's kind of like putting a normal automatic transmission into "L" or down-shifting it into any of the lower gear positions other than "D".

    MandyTee,

I'm not sure about the 2012 Prius because I still have my 2005, but there are 2 prerequisites for it to work on my 2G : the overhead switch must be in the "door" position (NOT "off") & the car has to be locked. The light will not come on if you approach the car with the fob & the car is unlocked. Remember, that's for the 2G Priuses, but I don't know how the 2012 is set up to operate.

To Leealwayswantedone (in Post # 213),

I see you have a 2009 2G, & I have the same problem with my 2005 2G [assuming you are implying "Vent" means the "Fresh air" setting rather than the "Re-circulate" setting (& NOT meaning the "dashboard vents" as opposed to the "Foot" position in the top row of button choices)] .

I don't know what it is with the control system for the heater/AC. I never use the "Auto" setting & always have the "Re-circulate" button on (unless I'm using the defroster---in which case the car defaults to "Fresh air", then reverts back to "Re-circulate" once I turn off the defroster). Almost every time I shut the car down, I hit the "Off" button & the system is still in the "Re-circulate" mode. However, when I return to the car later & start it, the display shows that the setting to be in the "Fresh air" mode rather than the "Re-circulate" mode that I left it in. If the car is quiet with no radio on, I can sometimes hear the diverter door in the heater box squeakily changing position by itself to the "Fresh air" position. By the time the display comes up, it is then showing the position to be "Fresh air" (or "Vent", if that's what you're referring to), so you aren't accidentally placing your Prius in the "Vent" setting. A little car gremlin is inside the heater box doing that for you.

I actually think that there may be some sensor that has something to do with maintaining the ideal battery temperature condition, that opens the vent to dissipate heat buildup in the cabin in the summer. But that wouldn't explain why it gets opened in the winter too, because I'm pretty sure the battery would enjoy being warmed (as we do too) by the greenhouse effect & its heat build up.

That trick with the keyfob worked on my Prius. All 4 doors unlock now when I grab the handle.

Thanks, Ken. I will have to check this info out more tonight with the car when it's dark. I can't recall if it was locked or not when I realized it doesn't light up when it's supposed to. I'll have to try locked/unlocked and see what happens. The overhead switch is set to door, that's the first thing I checked :)

I just got my first hybrid/plug-in car and i am sooooo excited! Slightly over whelmed at the moment, there's so much to learn and the salesman (nice guy) knew NOTHING! The dealership is offering a class to all new owners sometime soon so i will certainly be attending!
the major thing i wish he told me: why a $33,000 car doesnt come with floor mats!?! i'm very surprised and actually angry...i may call the dealership and complain. we left toyota at 10pm last night so couldnt really see anything....
is it standard for the 2012 plug-in to not come with floor mats?

The dealership told me nothing when I bought the car. The guy was so busy helping another customer....so by reading and exploring I am learning the car all on my own!

Prior to my Prius, I only had domestic cars, so I wish the dealer would've told me about the lever I need to pull in order to open the gas cover. Unbeknownst to me, I rolled into a gas station trying to fill up my tank, but I had to call my sales person and ask for help and was informed about the gas lever underneath my seat. What a shame.

This is so helpful! Bought my 2010 Prius IV last night! My salesman was very knowledgable, but this thread really helped prepare me. Thanks!

So true, my spouse and I went to one dealer and the sales person knew near nothing and even lied and said we had to buy what was on the lot or nothing at all. We went back to the place we originally bought our old Prius from in 2009 and they said they can get whatever model/trim we want it just might take more or less time depending what is around or if it has to wait to come in from Toyota.

Yet, the poor guy had no idea about add-ons like door trip molding and the such.

Oh and don't bother to ask about the level 2 charging station or pedestal, all he knew was they had several installed in the lot and in side and told us not to bother contacting any one.

LOL, like what you think you have "X" amount of fuel indicators show then suddenly after driving away they vanish to a fraction of what you saw. That has happen many times to the point I never trust it.

So true, in Nashua New Hampshire they have one sales Rep. who is amazing that is a "hybrid specialist" he has been specially trained to sell them since the Prius first came out years ago. If you talk to him or a "regular" sales Rep. the difference is night and day. Well worth the wait if you can make an appointment with a specialist in your area.
