Doh, I must have been thinking about Pease park, when I wrote that . Pease was one of the writers of the Texas constitution, and part of the war of Independence from mexico. He sided with the Union during the civil war, was Governor during reconstruction, and led a tax payer revolt after his term. During his term he paid off debt, and established funding for Texas schools and universities. He would hate gas rationing.

We have had this in Utah for a long time. And as some said above, most people are doing right at 80. You still have a group of people doing 90+ but it seems this group does 90+ even when the limit is 65. Even most of our 2 lane country roads are 65.

Yep, and Utah since raising the speed limit to have a fatality rate of only 0.9 in 2009. This is much lower than many states with lower speed limits.

I don't think that changing speed limits has changed the fatality rates that much from 1990 to 2009. I'm willing to bet that the change is mostly due to safety improvements in cars.

Not to mention the population differences of Utah vs. TX, CA, or NY and the density. 85mph on a rural highway in the middle of nowhere with minimal on and off ramps is a lot different that 85 on a 3-4 lane highway that runs through a major city with on and off ramps.
