I just completed this mod also, super easy even a cave man could do it! Sounds like I got a caddy now!

One of the least used mods I've done so far. I guess that is a good thing. :)

They put the FIAMM freeway blaster horns on mine for me while it was in the bodyshop. I will say that it is NOT as loud as I was expecting after all the accolades; but anything is better than the little meep meep one that came on the car!

So I just did the horn upgrade as well.

On the 1996 GSR-T I installed an 120 db air horn.
On the 2008 Rav4 I used the Toyota Premium horn since I got a good deal for them.
On the 2012 Prius I installed the FIAMM.

FIAMM and Toyota Premium sounds virtually the same and with the same strength. The air horn is a lot louder but had that metallic scream... but that aside.

As for install it took me a lot longer than you guys. It took me almost 45 minutes trying it the way you guys suggested which is:
    • Remove the top cover
    • Remove the front emblem
So what I did instead (and I can do it in less than 30 minutes) was:
    • Remove the top cover
    • Remove the top row holding the top part of the bumper to the car so you can peel back the bumper to get to the bolts with a socket set. (this you may be able to skip if you have to ratcheting wrench set)
    • Remove the hood hook (2 bolts) so you can slide your hand in easier (I have fat arms)
    Conclusion:
For around $20, this is much cheaper and sounds virtually the same as the Toyota Premium horn. As for the FIAMM horn, they are different than the Toyota Premium in the fact that the FIAMM needs to install the negative wire to one of the terminals where the Toyota one grounds with the install bolt.

i just finished the install. took me around 20 minutes from start to finish.
Thanks again for the detailed instruction.
Now, i'm sounding anal with this question..
Does it matter which horn goes to which side? high note on the Left and low tone on the Right? or vice versa?

i have a dealer installed alarm which sounds the horn if i use keyless entry and locking.
i have noticed that the sound when honking ( pounding on the steering wheel) is a lot louder and meaner compared to the alarm "horn".

Thanks for the detailed instructions! It took me about an hour to install but that's mostly cause I was running out of light and I don't have proper wire strippers and kept cutting the wire by accident...=)

Love it! I'm glad to "hear" so many folks have taken this route. I have a long, sad saga which led me to change out the meep-meep to the Fiamm Highway Blasters.

I reported this in a thread in September 2009: New Horn Installed: I Think They'll Hear Me Now! This is an older thread, so I apologize that no all of the images and sound files are available. I'm going to try to provide those again, if possible. I created both .wav and .mp3 files of the horn sound for those interested. (My apologies for the way I've done this, but I didn't see a way around it. I uploaded these as image files, changing the name by adding .jpg to the end of each file name. I had thought the files could be downloaded so that you could change each file name by removing the ".jpg" at the end of each, making recognized by your systems as sound files. I had to have an image extension to be able to upload it to PriusChat. Unfortunately, for this situation, you cannot download "image" files. Hopefully, someone can help me fix this mess!)

For those who were concerned about the effect on the DRCC, I'm certain mine was the first of these horn changes, and I know it was the first on the 2010 V with ATP, and there has been no ill effect on either the DRCC or the Pre-Collision System.

Thankfully, I don't use the horn very much, but I have no concerns any longer about being heard.

Hey Guys, can I get straight information particularly on a Prius 5 2012. I read over the posts but am a little confused about what car the posts are actually are talking about. So.... I have a Prius 5, (not a V) year 2012 and want to update the horn system from the factory squeak boxes to something louder. Has anyone changed the horns on their Prius 5 2012?
    Should I use the...
    a - Fiamm El Grande's 2-pack from Amazon.com.

or use the following two togeter
b - Fiamm 72112 Freeway Blaster LOW pitch Horn from Amazon.com.
    and
c - Fiamm 72102 Freeway Blaster HIGH pitch Horn from Amazon.com.

    Thank you For Handling This

    Jim

The information in my post above (and earlier thread) concerns a 2010 Prius V. In today's terminology, that would be a 2010 Prius Five. I don't know that there is any difference in engine compartment space or wiring between the 2010 and 2012, but that is only saying that I don't know. I can't see why there would be a difference.

The more critical question is whether you have the ATP in your Five. If so, then you need to be aware of and careful not to interfere with the radar system.

I installed the Fiamm High/Low combo.

    Great write up.

Factory horn sounds like two mice having sex, I swapped mine out with the PIAA horns, they sound really good. I would say this is the first thing someone should do, especially in So Cal.

Isn't it the Prius V Wagon as in the letter V and not the Roman numeral 5?
You would think that Toyota would have given that a different name.
    Anywho,
Under the hood it looks like the 2010 Pri and I agree with "a priori" and that if you have the ATP, do not obstruct it.

Getting tired of drivers giving me the finger as of late just because they got big trucks or whatever. I am a little confused for what the install is for people with the ATP package.

I have a stock of rocks in my car for when I chuck me at a holes who think they can give me the finger and get away with it :p

ATP = Advanced Technology Package (or in this case we are talking about the DCC (Dynamic Cruise Control)).
If you have never seen it, there is a big module behind the front emblem [IMG]

Last week I changed the WOLO air horns to Hella air horns.
    BIG difference.
The compressor on the WOLO horns are weak and could not sustain standing on the horn or just blow air if I tap the horn.
The Hellas stay forever and just a tap make them scream.

I've used the lower case v and in script to try to distinguish the new "wagon" from my car: 2012 Prius v as opposed to 2010 Prius V.
    Rather bizarre naming activity.

Just did the mod with the Fiamms. Took a while as I was slightly confused about whether or not to remove the bracket. One additional finishing touch I applied was wrapping the connection of the positive wire to the blade to better weather proof it from moisture. As I noticed that the tape was likely to unravel, I secured it with zip ties over the tape. I also connected the negative wires to the post so that it made a "U" shape so any water that get onto the wire will simply drip straight downwards and away from both ends of the connection. photo-1.JPG photo.JPG

    OK, Got it.
Sorry, I don't have the OEM horn picture, but the picture is what it looks like after the mod.
