I wonder, is there a way to sample every second the Scan Gauge II MPG readings? With the data you could accurately acquire MPG over all types of terrain. For example, when I'm going along 14 mile road in my city of Clawson at 35mph (with cruise on) the MPG reads 1707 mpg on a flat surface. Take this data to accurately know EV range. (EV would need to be used exclusively though, no HV) any takers?:)

UPDATE: sample every second of the Scan Gauge II and use an Excel spread sheet to graph instantaneous MPG readings. And some how convert into EV miles consumed/gained.

Using the Scan Gauge II readings of MPG should show a pattern, given the same road is traveled at the same speed. This pattern could be entered into a data base. When I travel on 14 mile road at 35mph the Scan Gauge II always gives me 1707 MPG reading. going uphill the reading decreases, going downhill the reading increases. EV loss/EV gain

Formulas are fine, but an actual measuring device makes a difference

How about using Torque and log the KW from ICE and HV battery?

next, we need GPS data logger to correlate with the instantaneous MPG of the Dyno-Scan. The GPS would correlate with elevation data (Google Maps?)

Torque is a GPS data logger and you can log any of the sensors along with the gps data.

I tried to do this with torque. When you average out those instantaneous mpg averages it wasn't anywhere close to my real mpg. Problem odd the distance traveled using zero gas-that torque still assigns that a fuel usage value

I would use kwh (gas and electric) used per road segment (per mile or km). I think one of the monitors (PID) is for KW from the ICE and another from the HV Battery.

yeah......it's obvious that 999.9MPG is not the same as 1707MPG......wonder how ODBII figures MPG when no gas is consumed during EV

but.....if you think about it.....having the MPG change value going uphill or downhill is better than 999.9MPG that doesn't change.....at least you have data you can work with

the best approach is going to be to pull a PID that shows the volume of fuel used over a specific period - either distance or time. That way you can say precisely 0.0025 gallons were used over the last 1/4 mile (or whatever). I'm not sure there's a PID that does this, at least not for the GEN III that i've found yet.

A friend just sent me this link. You can put it your start and stop address and it will calculate your expected EV consumption.

I just tried my daily route from the previous post and it was spot on.

PS, the Volt is known as an Opel Ampera in Europe.

Just pure EV no ICE, so it doesn't skew the data.

I keep forgetting this is in the PIP subforum, but it's something that would benefit all prius owners and the approach would be relatively similar whether EV or ICE.

I have access to decent software that can create a network based on real-world energy use data. I had a free weekend not long ago where I sat down and tried to implement. It was incredibly time consuming to build even a basic two-choice network (i.e. two ways to get to a destination - one over a hill and the other longer but flatter). In the end I gave up because it wasn't worth the time investment when I could just drive my car each way a few times and figure out which was more fuel efficient.

If the intent of this thread is to build (or talk about building) a model that would work universally around the country or world or whatever, that's not something that you or I or even 1,000 of us is going to accomplish soon, and it's not going to be very accurate. At least that's what I'm thinking right now.

I don't even think Google could accomplish this with much reliability because they don't have access to OBD fuel energy consumption data. It's really going to require a large investment by the automakers to pull this off. The good news is that once you have the energy consumption data/model created, the rest is easy. This is the future.
