Avg. cost for scheduled maintenance years 3-6?

I posted this in a thread 2 days ago from thread a few months ago. Someone in one of the threads payed $1,500 for it.

I do not know how much it cost for the pre paid maintenance. This is what needs done up to 75,000 miles.

The Prius comes with a free 25,000 pre paid maintenance.

0 to 25,000 miles cost $0
30,000 miles oil change $50, replace cabin and engine filter $30
40,000 miles oil change $50
50,000 miles oil change $50
60,000 miles oil change $50, replace cabin and engine filter $30
70,000 miles oil change $50

Total $310

Everything else is inspection. If they are quoting less than $310 you have a good deal. If not tell the finance guy trying to steal money from you he is a scum bag. All dealers are scum bags that use FUD to make people pay more money.

FWIW here's the Consumer Reports data for maintenance/repair cost:

Year 1: $150
Year 2-3: $550
Year 4-5: $800
Year 6-8: $1500

Bear in mind these costs include consumables like tires, wipers etc that won't be included in your plan. They also include an average costs of any non-warranty repairs that also won't be included and is likely why it goes up /yr over time.

My experience on our '05 and '08 has pretty much just been a $60-70 dealer "oil change" every 7-10,000 miles, and an engine and cabin air filter every 30k or so for ~$30 DIY from the parts store. Probably paying more than I have to by going to the dealer. Total cost for ~50k miles driven on each (each started with about 20k miles, now at ~70k miles) is ~$435, not including tires wipers and miscellaneous repairs.

On the Edmunds page you linked above, there is a "More about TCO ®" link that explains where they get their numbers. With regards to the Maintenance cost here is what it says:
Maintenance

This is the estimated expense of the two types of maintenance: scheduled and unscheduled. Scheduled maintenance is the performance of factory-recommended items at periodic mileage and/or calendar intervals. Unscheduled maintenance includes wheel alignment and the replacement of items such as the battery, brakes, headlamps, hoses, exhaust system parts, taillight/turn signal bulbs, tires and wiper blades/inserts. Estimated tire replacement costs are supplied to Edmunds.com by The Tire Rack, Inc.
Note that this includes "unscheduled" maintainance & wear items that would not be covered in the Toyota maintenance plan.

 

It is very hard to consider year 1,2,3 4 and so on when it comes to maintenance. I'm just over 6 months in my 2012 and I got 17,500 miles. My free maintenance will end in sept, 7 months I after I bought my car. All maintenance should be based on mileage and not yearl

 

I have a Gen III with 92,000 miles and in Oct it will be 3 years old.

- I have had 8 oil changes at around $50 each. I buy the 0W30 at Wallmart for $26 to $30 and pay Lube Stop $21 for a new oil filter and the oil change. Total $400.00
- I have replaced the cabin filter twice. I think I paid $12 each. Total $24.00
- Replaced one set of wipers $10.00
- Replaced the engine air filter twice $15.00. Total $30.00
- The only think that broke on the car was the driver head light at around 85,000 miles. That was around $10.00
- I bought winter tires the first year I got it. It was about $550 with new rims and tires. The OEM tires still have a lot of tread and I will buy another set of snow tires and rims for this winter. (My forth winter).

That is $1114.00 in total cost of ownership over 3 years.

Thanks for the info. I have about 64K miles, getting ready for a new set of tires (original OEM set - ECOPIA 20). I'll hit 3 years Oct 19th.

 

I keep track of every expense of my hybrids. This SS is our '04 G2 Prius, closing in on 145k miles. Less than a penny a mile for maintenance, wear and tear, and repairs. Last 4 years have evened out to $15 a month. No one confuses me with those people who have a mechanical aptitude, but I handle the simple stuff.

This might seem high to some but my situation is different.

I put on over 30,000 miles a year. That is a lot more oil changes. I bought a new set of rims and tires the first year I bought the car only for a safer winter. I did not get 20,000 miles of free maintenance that Toyota gives for free now.

This is a more realistic list of out of pockets expenses during the Toyota maintenance plan.

As far as and extended warranty I would have used zero of it over the life of my car. It would not cover a burned out light bulb.

Many people spend up to $1,500 for a Toyota maintenance plan and another $2,500 on an extended warranty. This only benefits the dealer not you the consumer.

 

anything the dealers sells besides a car is not worth buying. They will never give you a good deal. From 25k to 60 k I pay 200 for maint.

 

Depending on the state you are in, maintenance agreements are refundable.
In California you have 60 days after purchase to request a full refund and after that point you can still get a refund but it might be pro-rated.
Check the laws in your state regarding automobile warranties and maintenance agreements.

The refunds, of course apply to the maintenance agreements only, not the purchase of the automobile.

 

I ended up buying an engine once because I didn't have an extended warranty. Mind you, I still don't regret not buying the warranty because I'm still ahead by not buying warranties for all the cars I've owned, but I did opt for one this time. It may turn out to be a waste of money, but then so is insurance because I've only filed a single hail damage claim in over 50 years of driving. Not suggesting anything one way or the other, just relaying my experience.

 

An extended car warranty might protect you against a couple thousand dollar repair at most, while the car insurance can easily protect you for over a million.

 

Gee, I guess I didn't know that. You sure have a burr up your butt about extended warranties. Did someone force you to buy one or something? Or do you just not like it when someone doesn't take your advice at face value? How about I cancel mine and send you any bills over the next 7 years? Seems like a perfect way to prove your point.

I said put the warranty money in a rain-day fund for the (unlikely but not impossible) chance that a repair occurs. To wit:

Extended warranties are designed to make the car dealership money. They generally end or can not be renewed at the point they know the odds of a claim reach 100%.

So, they are generally a waste of money...once you factor in the time and energy (and cost) you might have to expend to get them honored...if you ever need to use them.

However, if you are the poor sod whose car (toaster/PC/TV/etc.) went BOOM right after the warranty period, it's a great investment.

I bought the extended warranty on my Xbox 360 because of the common RROD issue. Never used it. I got a RROD, but Microsoft extended the factory warranty by 2 extra years, so the repair was under their warranty. After that, it never gave me another problem. Had I known when I bought the policy that they were going to extend the manufacturer's warranty, I'd saved my money.
