I wonder if we will be able to replace our current PIP batt with higher capacity li-io in the future

This has been asked often about the Leaf and Volt as well. My opinion remains "no" simply because I'm sure the auto manufacturers would rather sell you a new vehicle than to retrofit an old one.

The real question is, if the battery were to be larger, where would it go? It seems they'd have to sacrifice some cargo space. I'm sure many people would be happy to make that sacrifice in order to get the extra range, though.

 

I agree that should you have that option, it would not involve Toyota.

 

hopefully, it will be more capacity in the same space. but i'm thinking 3-5 years, and a new vehicle will probably be much improved anyway.

 

What automaker has ever offered a propulsion-system related upgrade after purchase?

That's what aftermarket providers are for.

 

A simple look reveals more room available. Toyota leaving that area for crumple-zone use and better weight-distribution isn't necessarily what an aftermarket provider would do. In fact, they are likely to take advantage of that extra space. There is a certain degree of mutual benefit.

 

I considered making my '06 into a PHEV. I got a PiP instead. Cars are perishable. Modified cars are more perishable AND less valuable. When it is time to go for longer range traction batteries, if I am still on the market for a different car, they will come in a new car. This PiP will stay stock. Those who choose to experiment will teach us all valuable lessons, however. Experimentation takes both money and energy. Often what you get is just frustration. Leave a Toyota stock and it seems to last and last. To some of us, that is virtually priceless even if it is sometimes boring.

 

Not going to happen. But, I'll likely be at the front of the "line" again when the next major Prius powertrain update comes out. Whether its a bigger battery, etc.

 

While I agree that it is unlikely that there will be a Toyota traction battery upgrade...
