Better MPG at a steady 80mph than 60mph

    Those are numbers from German fuelly.com type site, I used it as an example what people are getting in real world conditions in Europe. Users input their distance driven and fuel input, sure there are some invalid inputs, but they get averaged out. What type of driving? No one knows, every day type?
    It's also funny that Prius in Europe (on spritmonitor.de) is getting worse fuel economy (46 MPG) than you Americans 48 MPG (on fuelly.com), from prices of gas here in Europe you would expect quite opposite. Winter conditions may be different and maybe more short distances here in Europe.

    Also note that those are 1.6 diesel engines with only 90-110 HP and manual gearbox, those are not popular (available?) in America.

    I'm in the UK, so diesel is fractionally more expensive than petrol. So I suppose it is a Prius for me then.

    Just have to decide if it is worth going for a T-Spirit or a T4.

    That Mondeo still looks good though....

    Mondeo, especially 2.0 diesel will never get you under 6 l/100 km (over 40 MPG) it will be more like 7 l/100 km (33 MPG). You must get lover powered diesel if you want to even come close to Prius.

    Yeah, it was the new 1.6 TDCi Business Edition I linked to earlier in the thread. Official combined figure of 65mpg

    In California, the legislature raised gas prices by 30 cents. This made diesel less expensive than gas.

    This month tax changes result in petrol increasing by 3.5 cents while diesel dropped 1 cents a gallon.
    All told it sounds to me like diesel fuel in CA is taxed some 6.5 cents more per gallon.

    Well the problem is obvious:

    Those are USA gallons so you'll need a correction factor, divide by 1.2, to get imperial gallons per mile. But one thing is universal . . . auto journalists write terribly inaccurate reviews of the Prius.

    I notice you list 'another hybrid,' my thinking is enjoy. If you decide to try a Prius, consider starting with a one-owner, 1.5L or 1.8L model. The price will be softer and you'll likely have a lot of life left in the car.
