Ford C-Max Plug-in hybrid to have 20 mile range

    Agreed.. in fact I'd say its likely more similar to the early statements of 15miles range of the PiP, blended and not necessarily EPA testing.

    actually the C-Max is listed as being 21 mile range. if we look at the PiP and its 4.4 Kwh battery (along with Toyota conservatism) we might think that Toyota would hold 1.4 Kwh back to use 3 Kw. using an average of 3.5 miles per K making about 10.5 miles EV

    on the C-Max with its 7.5 Kwh pack and Ford's demostrated "risky" behavior so they might use say...6 KwH of the 7.5 leaving about the same 1.5 Kw in reserve. so at the same 3.5 miles/K that would be...

    21 Miles!!

    Nice observation, Dave. But C-MAX Energi is more than 500 lbs heavier.

    Space volume alone isn't the end all and be all though. Shape of the space is also important. A boxed off end simply provides more usable space than the Prius' slanted hatch. The Prius is classified as a sedan, as those who got huffy about Ford's claims for the Fusion like to point out. The hatch is more versatile than a trunk, but not as much as a wagon. Which maybe what the C-max is classified as by the EPA, Like the v, while the liftback is classified as a car.

    Wow.. you think they are agressive enough to do 80%DOD? Even with a TMS, that is very very agressive. Might let them get 20miles in year one.. but it could fade much faster. With the leaf issues in the new, they might want to be a tad more conservative than that.


    I was thinking more like 70% DoD (more agressive them the volt.. but about what the PiP is doing), resulting in 5.75 usable. I was guestimating about 3.4miles/kWh (from battery, 34.6kw/100miles from the wall.. so just a little more efficient than the volt) that whould be about 17miles.

    I think you don't understand the US car market. The c-max has some things in between, but will likely compete more with prius v sales more than liftback. Higher seating position, no split window, more passenger room, worse gas mileage. Ford is going to pull prius v type numbers, not prius liftback numbers. It competes with the prius v in the not a prius liftback but a little more with worse gas mileage. It is more CUV like and the prius v is more station waggon like. I guess in euro terms that is MPV versus sportwaggen.:) I don't think the magazines are positioning it wrong.

    Hey to me a avalon is just a camry with a little more luxury. People are going to buy more liftbacks than c-max. Hopefully this will hit better than the escape hybrid for ford. It seems like it is priced right to sell.

    The key here is 95 mpge to compute electric usage. Even if it is 21 miles aer, I would expect 1 mile to be gasoline, then lets use 20 miles * 33.7/95 = 7.1. But there are charging losses, lets assume 20%, we get
    7.1*80% = 5.7 kwh usable batteries. That still seems high to me, lets wait for official figures to come out, but this would give 76% SOC. Since the ICE is more powerful in the c-max they don't need to keep as much in researve to give full performance in hybrid mode, but do need to keep some for safety.

    Also, guessing that the Prius v Wagon plug-in will come soon with a battery larger than the current 4.4 kwh?
