Welcome to the 700 Mile Club!

I thought it would be fun to start three new clubs. One for those who have reached 600 miles on a tank of gas, one for those nutty members who have reached the vaulted 700 mile ranks and an 800+ club for those truly skilled enough to go well beyond nutty and have the hypermiling skills to match. What makes makes these high mile tanks so remarkable is the fact the Prius is cursed with a rather small fuel tank of only 11.9ga. While some other high mpg vehicles like the VW TDi can easily achieve a 700-800mile tank, they have much more fuel capacity (Passat =18.5ga, Jetta = 14.5ga) such that you don't have to achieve very high mpg numbers to pull one off.

Please do not attempt this without thorough planning for the exact mpg needed to attain 700 miles+ and unless traveling in a familiar and safe area!

Since I have done neither (my max was 598 miles) I cannot officially get this Club started so who's going to post the first picture and tell us their story? *edit* I am now part of the club. :)

    Requirements:
    • A picture of your HSI display with the required number of miles
    • A description of your techniques (doesn't have to be exhaustive) and conditions
    • Time of year
    • How long you ran on the blinking low-fuel warning light

I don't want to premature (and hopefully not jinx myself) but I think I have a decent chance at 700 miles this tank. And to be honest, not sure when I will be this close again. So I will definitely be pushing the limits to get there. :)

I was considering it too. :) If you pushed it hard you could get 63.6mpg calculated and pull it off if you pumped 11ga. Sounds a bit daunting to me now that I think about it. lol

May 1st, 2012. My Yokohamas were at the end of their life. We had some wonderfully warm weather and favorable tailwinds again. I had more weekend driving than my 70.0 mpg (shown in the 600 mile thread). I was holding 72 mpg until then. I'm also saddled with extra short trips during the week, which kept me from attaining the 70.0 mpg level. Still, it was a good tank. It took 11.1 gallons. Kept my top speeds below 60 mph. Regular commute is 70 miles round trips with lots of opportunities to pulse and glide when in heavy traffic (slow and go traffic). Warm temps and no A/C. The last PIP started flashing around 615 miles or so, so nearly 100 miles on the flashing PIP.

My summary is on the 600 club thread, so I'll not repeat it. The numbers are below.
    7/27/2009 736.8 miles 10.2gals.
    7/27/2011 711.1 miles 10.5gals.
    8/16/2011 715.0 miles 10.4gals.
I should mention that these numbers were with the OEM Integrities.

Awesome numbers for your Gen II! You are braver than I....I wouldn't fool with a 700 mile tank if I had the bladder system that the Gen II has compared to the "normal" gas tank of a Gen III.

Thanks Paul. I ask that we post pictures of the tank but I've seen your updates at Fuelly for some time now. I know you're not pulling our legs. ;)

Till a week or so with the derecho that we had, I would have been one of those living for best tank full... But thinking now that having a a fill- up at half full makes more sense.....

    1. Here's a link to a photo of my last +700 mile tank

    Flickr: drydem's Photostream

    2. I'm hypermiling using mainly P&G, DWL, DWB, SHM, and Warp Stealth mode.
    3. The miles were driven between June 2nd to 28th of 2012 - mainly in Maryland
    4. IIRC - the last bar started blinking at 640 miles but I didn't get to the DTE=0 miles until about 680 miles.

I've only gone pass 700 miles once before on 09/29/2011 ( 727 miles, 10.251 gallons) but I didn't bother to get a photograph of it. I have a pretty good shot at getting over 700 miles on this current tank if all goes well ( when I get +325 miles from first half of the tank - I normally have a good shot at getting +700 miles per tank). My entire mileage log is under "HyperDrive 1" at Cleanmpg.com. My primary focus has been to get the overall mpg as close to 65 mpg as possible. Currently my overall mpg is 60 mpg over 25000 miles. You know the only reason I drove over 700 last year was because of this priuschat posting by Mark doing 800 mile on a tank... I just got chicken and decided not to go any further... :p

No but we can create a new club for PIP owners. What sounds reasonable but is still an achievement? :)

I can't believe I missed it by 3 miles. I have no doubt that my last pip was blinking away and I didn't dare travel those last three miles.

Someone did a 800 mile tank in a gen3? I'll be honest with you, I have a few roads that i I had 24 hours time to kill, I could probably drive them repeatedly and pull it off. The question is, how did that person get over 800? It's certainly possible if your work commute is a perpetual motion loop where you gain enough speed down every hill to make it up the next with no gas and no battery and continue on like this in both directions.

Mark's in Oklahoma and was using 100% gas not 10% ethanol gas like what I'm stuck with. So from the start Mark's gasoline has a bit more energy per gallon than mine. Mark was getting something like 75 mpg on his 800 miles tank and IIRC his fill up took +10.5 gallons of gas. Mark's one way commute 35 miles is about twice as long as mine which is 16 miles. Mark also said he drove way pass the DTE=O miles and had an emergency tank of gas in the Prius just in case he ran out of gas in the middle of the road. I've never been able to get more than 70 mpg on a tank (7% less than Mark - which sounds about right given I'm using 10% ethanol gas. ) . What got me to chicken out was the math 11.5 gallons * 70 mpg = 805 miles ... it was just way tooo close for comfort for me.:cautious:

I can't find any non ethanol stations here in NJ either. That's a really awesome tank though, he really stands out in the crowd with that kinda mileage!

Just real quick, if I keep a gallon of fuel with me, and I run the Prius out.. Can I just pour my gallon into the tank, and go fill up somewhere? Or is there complications with running out?

The Japanese hypermiler's used to jack up the tank side of the car and fill to the brim. That's good for an extra 100miles or so yeah?

This was my June 2012 trip
    1207 km ( 750 miles )
    36.34 l ( 9.6 U.S. gallons )
    displayed mpg:
    2.9 l/100km ( 81.1 mpg U.S. )
    calculated mpg:
    3.01 l/100km ( 78.14 mpg U.S. )
    ( 3.8 % difference )

I use to perform common hypermiling techniques, mostly push and glide, to achieve these numbers.
Urban and suburban commutes help a lot.

    Amazing tank!

Do you have a lot of roundabouts there? I've always thought those are perfect for a Prius.
