that's my other 4 Seater load up with the pack and play luggage,a cooler with some food the new jugging stroller and two kiddie gates....

and then there is the bikes....

Is that bike carrier legal or is it one you put together yourself? Do you not need a light board and licence plate holder at the back of the bikes?

More like the. Veracruz which we looked at but this was bigger and when we use the third row it's a lot more comfy as I normally sit back there.

 

And you don't need extra lighting or a licence plate attached to the back? How does it affect your insurance? What if the bikes are blocking your lights or importantly your brake lights and someone hits you?

 

Oh no you bought the wrong car, just kidding. You have a wrong stroller, I have two, bigger like yours and a small buggy/umbrella type that we took on an airplane to Greece and fitted it in rented Hyundai Getz.

 

That's why I bought the umbrella stroller yesterday ;-) and decided against the Thule roof stuff as the clamps fit metal to metal and I don't like that.
Also, the roof box, I already have, is 2 meters long and I wouldn't be able open the back door while I had the roof box up there.

That's it. Completely illegal to obscure your rear lights and licence plate here. Would also cause issues if someone rear ended you without 100% completely visible lights.

Are the Euro style light and plate holders optional in the US or do people just not bother? Maybe there's a market opportunity for you? lol

 

No one bothers man. It just doesn't matter to people and most just Spring for the hitch and not even bother to wire it up

 

I have noticed hitch hauls with a place to remount the plate, and some even have lights.

I guess the open frame of a bike just isn't considered obstructing enough. Though I think the laws on the book could give a cop enough reason to pull you over. The fines probably aren't high enough to bother.

 

It definitely is against most state laws, but really is it against the spirit of those laws? The license plate is meant to identify the car, I would think if you broke the law, they could radio about the volt with the two bikes hanging in the back. Most police have better things to do than enforce a technicality of the law. If you got pulled over, you would likely just get a warning, and the police officer would be wasting his time, unless there was something else you were doing.

Now if the lights are obstructed enough at night for the car behind not to see you its a different mater.

 

I agree with it not being worth a cop's time. I haven't had any trouble seeing the lights of a car with a rear bike rack. If it had become a concern during the years these racks have been sold, the manufacturers would be only selling European style ones now.

Maybe differences in rear light regulations on cars mean they are more blocked in Europe. Maybe the US just doesn't want to discourage anyone actually exercising.

 

Or maybe that's why our litigation claims aren't as high? We actually try to avoid an accident in the first place. Is it not better to have additional lighting to avoid someone not seeing your brake lights, rather than sue them for $50,000 because they ran into the back of you, and then grumble your insurance rates are so high? Just a thought?
