I've never even used the port yet. If it can charge cellphones it will make my upcoming trip easier.

I haven't tried it for my Droid, but I recall people here mentioning charging their iPhones. It does charge my (non-iPod) mp3 player, so I have no reason to doubt that it can charge anything that typically charges via USB.

I plugged in my LG non smart phone. In a few minutes I got a warning on the MFD saying something like "attached device drawing too much load". It was charging though until the warning came on.

Same here, but I also tried a small USB hard drive (rather than just a memory stick) and got the "Power consumption of USB device too high" message.

you can basically do anything you want in your USB port connection. It can charge GPS, iPod, iPad, iPhone even my mc air laptop is charging and i can play my iTunes from there too. Or any gadget that can be connected to USB. Enjoy it and have fun.

How are you charging a Macbook Air from the USB port? Do you mean the 12 volt accessory port?

USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 have different power specs as far as supplying an external device with current. Max current for USB 2.0 is 500mA and for USB 3.0 it's 900mA. You have to look at the current requirement of your device to see if the port will supply enough power. Judging from ftl's experience with a plug-in hard drive, the Toyota USB port may be USB 2.0.

yes.. sometimes certain phones or other USB devices will draw too much power.. and will cause it to overload and then.. yea.. it might stop charging or whatnot...

the USB in the car isn't really designed to charge power hungry devices.. so that's why you might get that message.

The C is most definitely not USB 3.0
