Questioning the Value of SGII

    Slowly getting hotter in my neighborhood. Today a 200 mile trip in the CTh in ambient temps of 90-95F. AC set to 75F auto, after initial cooling for 5 minutes driving with windows open. I ended the trip at 60.5 mpg on the meter. Meter usually reads about 4.7% optimistic.

    I figure once the cabin interior is cooled to steady state, ongoing AC power to remove the sunshine heat is about 100 watts, or about 1% energy penalty. I'll check my guess with a SG.

    That's sounds like extremely good FE in a CTh, considering the EPA.

    That sounds right. Once the car is cool I usually only notice a couple mpg loss in that temp range. It's that initial cooling that gets me. Especially if I don't use my windshield shade!

    ^^ Better than average, yes. My Lexus dealership contact tells me most customers report 45-47 mpg on their meters. Sometimes I wonder if drivers do not simply strive to conform to EPA ;)

    Looks like Fuelly has most people's average at about 42.5.

    Battery temp sensors 1,2 and 3 are located at either end and the middle of the battery. Temp 1 is closest to the battery fan. Temp 2 is usually higher since it is in the middle. This is the one that I monitor the most.

    There is a battery fan inlet temp but not an outlet temp.

    I used to be able to say "pretty darned good" until you started rubbing my nose in 60-70 mpg reports every day. ;)

    as it says in the spreadsheet title I had it set at 75 inside and it was about 85 outside and I started in a garage that was probably about 77.

    Mark, if I am reading your time sequence correctly the first digits are hour then minutes then seconds?

    You started in the realtively cool garage so the interior should have been cool and didn't suffer from heat soak. This is good for a baseline. I would like to see what happens after sitting in the hot sun for a few hours such that the interior is heat soaked and 130F+. This is the situation in which I notice the AC making such a heavy hit to mpg. With the cabin already cool the hit is much more mild.

    Can anyone else offer input on what parameters Mark should monitor? I assume watt consumption is good enough for conversion purposes?

    Very nice. I set up a rolling average of 25 seconds of your data to handle the cycling on/off. When I figure out how to use the time stamps I'll post a graph.

    What settings did you use ? Auto or manual ?
    If you don't mind, I'd also like to know the overall direction(s) you traveled as the AC power use changes, your locale altitude, and the car color.

    And I can include as much data along side that other data as I want...at even smaller time intervals. I did 5 sec intervals simply because I didn't see a need for a smaller interval.

    Can you include travel direction as another parameter ?

    btw, I meant to ask what color your car is, and whether it is tinted ?

    Just added it as another parameter. And I have a nautical blue (dark blue). And no tint, just stock.

    You can also log the Solar Sensor (spreadsheet row 53) to tell you how much sunlight is getting into the car.
