Interest in group buy for no-holes parking sensor

Since these sensors are (hopefully) only going to be used at low speeds, it may be possible to tap into the VPNS circuitry that activates only below 15MPH? For instance run a relay to the speaker that makes the wierd noise that nobody ever hears anyway

 

I will be surely in the next group buy, but will have to wait until someone post a DIY and they success story..

How does one look into setting something like this up? I have no electrical engineering experience or background so I hope someone can look into this.

So VPNS is the nosie maker? That wouldn't work for me.

I suppose it would be difficult to tap into the radio circuitry which locks out selected input after you exceed 4mph? I would assume that would be a software control and not an electrical signal.

 

I just got my kit today. Here's a picture of the contents:
The control box is smaller than I expected. The wire bundle with the yellow rubber band is for the speaker. The line running between the antenna tape and the control box is about six feet long. Not shown is a small push-button. The item at the upper left is a strip of "dum dum", bits of which are used to stick components to body panels.

Next, figuring out the install . . .

 

I've got 95% of the kit installed.
1. Ran the antenna in the lower part of the dam.
2. Ran the antenna wire into the cabin through the grommet that is behind and to the left of the master brake.
3. Bolted the ECU unit onto the black plastic cover under the steering wheel, that covers OBD port.
4. Glued the Speaker under the switches to left of steering wheel.

What I'm having trouble finding is a 12v source for the ecu unit. I been poking my meter around but still I've had no luck.. My car is an 2012 PIP. Anyone have a wire diagram that could help?

Did you have to take off the wiper tray to get access to the grommet? I believe I had to when I did my fog lights.

For power, I'd look at the threads here on the fog lights, and/or the turn-signal mirror installs. There's also a downloadable service manual either here or in the Maintenance thread.

 

The grommet has a Nub on the left side that is blocked. I was able to reach through and with just feel...cut off the nub. I used a very small pair of dykes. On the inside there is a hole that matches it. So to answer your questions didn't remove anything.

This might help. The red wire is constant power the blue is accessory power.



Did you have to take your bumper off the front or back?

 

This is great help. I installed in the front bumper. Just removed lower plastic cover.... Going right now to finish.

 

I already used the nub for my fog lights. I'll have to make a new cut, but the rubber is thick as I recall.

BTW, I don't think hooking up to constant power is a good idea. Better to hook up to power that's only hot when the ignition is on. The accessory power line is probably a better idea.

 

I'm hoping my kit comes in this week ready for install this weekend! For fathers day I asked for time to work on my car. No honey dos....

I have more than a handful of things to do to my car this weekend. Can't wait!

 

I finished my install today. The good news is that it does work, sensing and alarming when an object is about two inches from the front lip. I ran the antenna right behind the edge of the front lip, all the way across from just below the fog lights. I mounted the control module on the panel under the dash below the steering wheel, on the back edge. I won't kick it accidentally when I hit the brake pedal:



I got the antenna cable thru the rubber plug by punching a hole thru with a narrow wood chisel, then I used a straightened wire coat hanger as a fish-tape, pushing it thru the rubber into the engine compartment. I taped the antenna wire onto the end (butted to the end of the coat hangar), greased it up and pulled it back thru. It just barely reaches the control box with little slack.

I put the on/off switch on the panel with the button on the bottom so that I can turn it on and off, but it's awkward. I was hoping that the system would work as advertised, but . . .

The unfortunate news is that at the lowest sensitivity setting, I'm getting occasional false alarms while I drive, when I'm braking, going downhill (?) and over uneven surfaces. It goes off at driveways into parking lots and when exiting parking lots. It also doesn't provide a series of beeps as I approach an obstacle, only a solid tone when the object is a couple of inches away. I'll probably have to leave it off unless I'm approaching some parking lot barrier or wall.

I've got an e-mail into the Proxel contact to see if anything can be done at this point.

 

Found this Speed activated switch product doing some searching... For $86... i'd rather just toggle the switch on/off.
