Back in the '90's I came out to my car after work and found it filled to the top of the seats with packing peanuts. It took a long time to get all of them out of there so I could drive the car. Serious. What I did wrong was leave my windows down a bit as it was summer and hot. Later I found out it was my coworkers wishing me a happy birthday :D

That was a lot of freakin peanuts to bag up [IMG]

A bad economy can sometimes bring on desperate actions by people that, under more normal conditions, would never attempt an act of vandalism and/or theft. It's a shame that it happened and I'm not, in any way, excusing the perpetrator's act. It's always unsettling when a thief strikes, no matter where.

Try to keep anything of value out of any car when you leave it somewhere. As mentioned by others before, if someone decides they are going to damage a car or steal something, they will, especially if the opportunity is easily provided.

When your car goes in for repair, see if they won't take off the inner door panel and vacuum out the glass that may have fallen in there. It's something you can do yourself if the repair shop won't.

Any real repair facility would take that door apart and clean every last crumb of glass out of there. Don't accept anything but a 100% perfect repair on anything. Make sure you get OEM Toyota glass to match the rest of the glass in your car.

my insurance sent me "Safelite" (chain franchise window fixers)... they actually gave me an option for aftermarket or OEM since my insurance ok'ed the OEM....
they come, inspect my car (for their liability) and clean up the mess really really well, at least this person did.
he replaced two windows and its good as new. took him 1:45min.
he even re-sealed the plastic cover, which he cut out to vacuum the inside of the door.
the katzkin guys didnt realize the windows were replaced yesterday until i told them.

OP - sorry that this had to happen to you. As others have said in the future just be sure to stash anything of value out of sight. It might not stop a thief, but it will deter an opportunist.

When I leave my car, I usually put my phone in the consol glove box, or take it with me, but I leave the iPhone cord hanging around the shifter. If anybody could look into my car past the LAM window tint, they would see the cord and the iPod/iPhone is not there.

Well I don't know. He does have a new Cell Phone and a new Ipod.

On the serious side? The OP say's your "bag" was gone through?

Did you have anything in your bag that could be compromising? Such as bank account statements or numbers? If so you might want to consider changing your accounts. Pain in the rear, but worth it.

Every cell phone has a unique network address and is trackable.

Another tactic I've seen is fake valuables that are rigged in some manner and intentionally made easy to steal. I read a story about someone who, many, many years ago, purposefully left some junk computers in his garage and left it open at times. As expected, one of those got stolen, but unknowingly to the thief, it was mostly a worthless empty case with the AC input rigged into a dead short. He unfortunately never heard what happened next.

the few times i have heard of people breaking in, they had something of value in view.

doesn't make it right, but give word of advice, make sure nothing of value is in view...
