I've been researching what car to buy now for quite some time, and have decided on a "V" over the standard prius ... I have also determined, since I have a good droid phone which has decent nav capability on it's own with google, and a 10inch tablet ... with the same gps nav ... I couldn't justify buying a v3 ... a lot of people complained about the nav and entunes not being all it was hyped to be.

so - then, i'm reading how a lot of people have added a speed hack and can watch dvd's (for their kids ;) ) while driving.

Does the base v2 stereo playback DVD as well? reading the toyota website - none of the models "claim" dvd playback. curious if anyone has tried?

I'm quite sure that only the v5 plays DVDs, and possibly only the ATPackage (which is only available on the v5). If that's the case, the DVD player would be a nearly $10,000 option... Sounds like a portable DVD unit might be a better option, unless you want any of the other v5/ATP features. And if it is indeed for the kids, why would you want a small screen up in the front of the car, that your kids couldn't see from the back seat? ;)

I'm with you on the v2 vs v3, though - I think the v2 is a better deal. I have the v3, and I have an Android phone, but I've never felt the need to use Entune. The driver shouldn't be messing with stuff on the screen anyway, and if you have a passenger, they can just use your phone to look stuff up. The in-dash nav is a little more convenient than a stand-alone unit, but $1000 is a lot for that feature. I ended up with the v3 because my wife liked the idea of nav built-in, and there were not going to be any v2s available in our area for a while, but the v3 we test-drove was available right away. FWIW, after using the built-in nav for a while, my wife says she prefers the interface of our TomTom. In fact, if it had a bigger screen and a good dash mounting system, we might use that instead of the built-in GPS. But now that we have the in-dash system, it's not worth buying something else - it's just a matter of getting used to it.
    Hope this helps,
    Andy

Thanks for the reply - yeah, we have a portable unit already - and we have a minivan with the in-car system for the kids ... which likely we would take it on a long trip for more comfort. I had been reading through the articles here learning as much as I can - since I'm new to Toyota completely....let alone a hybrid. My dad had been a GM mechanic for over 40 yrs... so up to this point we always bought GM ...having access to his knowledge, special tools, testers, etc. he now works for an auto auction - where brand isn't so much an issue.

I own a 2012 Prius Plug-in which has the ability to play DVD's when the emergency bracke is engaged, once the brake is released the DVD disappears. Does anyone know of an override or simple modification to get around this problem. My spouse travels with me frequently and I would like to keepher entertained. I have no intention of watching while driving.

Yes, I bought the above linked override (the v1v for $100 total) and it works great! DVDs on the main screen in my V5 with ATP can now be viewed while the car is in motion.
