I had been led to believe I would still receive the benefit of the federal and CA state tax incentives if I leased the Prius Plug-in, but my accountant flipped when I mentioned a lease and seems to think the leasing company gets to cash in on the tax breaks. I was resigned to defeat on this one, except it turns out my dealer had to redo all the paperwork after using the wrong VIN number on the deal paperwork. And so I'm trying to figure out if I can use this opportunity to change this transaction to a purchase. My salesman still insists I get the tax breaks even with a lease. Can anyone shed some light here? Thanks.
No Fed Tax incentive if PIP is leased | PriusChat and PIP Lease Terms - Will Toyota Give Us a Fair Deal? | PriusChat should help. I'm no authority on this. I just know how it works if you lease a Nissan Leaf and remember the above threads.
The way I read the info on the State's web site, leased PIPs qualify for the cash rebate. The rules document is attached.
