Toyota Extra Care Platinum or Gold

    Inverter is part of the hybrid system and is warranted for 8 year/100K miles (10 years/150K in CARB states). Extended warranty doesn't cover the hybrid system.

    Actually you are wrong.

    I keep reading people posting mis-information and it really needs to stop. The Toyota Motor Platinum warranty coverage clearly states under hybrid components that the inverter is covered along with many other parts that I keep reading about people saying are not covered.

    BUT...don't take my word for it, read for yourself:

    Either way it's redundant, as the hybrid system warranty will cover it for up to 8 years/100K miles (or longer in CARB states).

    Page 19 in the maintenance guide:

    Hybrid System
    • Battery control module (battery voltage sensor)*
    • Battery termistor
    • Generator
    • Hybrid battery*
    • Hybrid control module (power management control module)*
    • Inverter with converter*
    • Motor
    • System main relay and battery current sensor

    * Covered under the Hybrid System Warranty for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

    If you were worried about the inverter and bought the extended warranty for that, you've wasted your money.

    There's still a lot of ambiguity in the 10/150k CARB warranty. The only item that is definitely covered is the battery. I have yet to see an explicitly list of covered items (for the entire hybrid system) for this CARB warranty.

    So, do we have a current list of these CARB states? Just curious if this CARB warranty would be applicable to Georgia.... Is it natural to assume that if you are NOT a CARB state then, that the hybrid system would NOT fall under this "blanket hybrid warranty", thus the potential justification for possibly needing to purchase the warranty?

    Obviously I did not buy an extended warranty for just the Inverter. My Prius wil see conditions most others will not. I only mentioned the Inverter as I can smell it cooking.

    Fortunately I don't feel that I've wasted my money, perhaps in time I may feel differently based on the outcome when the extended warranty has lapsed. I'll let you know in approximately 115k miles.

    For me the cost is negligible. My 2008 FJ exceeded the price of this warranty with one repair that occurred outside the warranty. My throwout bearing went out and I spent a small fortune getting it repaired - known issue too.

    I purchased my car in Cali so I am covered by the 10yr/150k mile battery warranty.

    Overall I'm not too worried about the cost of the warranty - obviously it's a gamble but I'm not a gambling man. I'd rather pay now and assume I'm covered until "X" and I'm OK with that. :)

    FWIW We have a 2004 Prius Package 9. Vin ends in 1211 meaning it's just barely outside of the first batch of the Gen IIs. We bought the Extracare Platinum warranty for $980 or so when it was still offered here on PriusChat. Glad we did. We had over $6500 in claims after the basic warranty ran out. The AC compressor and the VSC system were the big ticket items. The "warranty" paid for itself and then some. We still have the 2004. It's been fine for the last 14 months when I took it over from my wife. I only drive 500 miles a month though...much less than average.

    We plan on buying one for our 2010 Prius before the basic runs out. Sometimes the extended warranties are a waste of money...sometimes they pay out.

    The hybrid system will still fall under the 8 year/100K mile Hybrid System Warranty. It's just a bit longer for CARB states (10 years/150K miles). Given that extended warranty can be purchased for up to 8 years/125K miles, there's not much benefit in purchasing the full boat only for the hybrid system (just 25K additional miles of protection) if you're not in a CARB state. Even then, the extended warranty does not cover the battery itself, although other hybrid components such as battery blower assembly, motor control, thermistor, hybrid control computer, inverter, etc. are covered.

    That is another myth about buying an extended warranty. There is a large list of items not covered that if they break you can have a huge repair bill. Also if you cause damage to the vehicle like hitting a pot hole it is not covered. Most of the items covered will never break.

    Your inverter is covered by the factory warranty for up to 8 years/100K miles (or longer in CARB states). You do not have to pay more for that.

    My comprehensive insurance will cover damages caused by road hazards.

    The majority of your list above are "wear and tear" items that I expect would not be covered under any warranty.

    I'm familiar with the list of excluded components as well as included. My personal past experience with Toyota pushed me in the direction of purchasing the extended warranty. I'm Ok with this because I know the cost upfront and I'm EXPECTING one of the "covered" components to fail. I'd rather pay now as I know I will not be paying later.

    Again, I feel the price I paid was super fantastic and to those who are shopping for a warranty, please consider Jerry as it is the best price I've seen. :rockon:

    I went with my dealership at time of car purchase, but I too got a great deal.

    Just have to realize some people dont have the same thinking, judgement or opinions.
    I am happy with my extended warranty purchase.

    So, we know the battery is covered under CARB, but the other components are iffy. However, at the same time, it makes little financial sense to buy an ext warranty solely for the purpose of covering a few select hybrid system components from 100 to 125k.

    Do you think that Toyota (or anyone) sells a product that they know will lose them money? Of course they don't. They price the product so that it will certainly make them a profit. In other words, in their favor, not the buyer's favor.

    My opinion is why would anyone buy a warrenty for the prius if your already getting one from toyota,which happens to be pretty good, waste of money as far as im concerned, buy one when you 30 days away from the end of the factory warrenty,then it does something for you, if you were to need it

    While that's true, the major difference is the standard warranty will cover everything other than consumables that've reached their end of life whereas the extended warranty won't. For example, the center console lid becomes inoperable and won't stay close, it'd be covered under the standard warranty but not extended warranty.

    So, if only the hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150k miles, we know that the control modules and inverter are still covered for 8 years/100K miles and it says so on pages 19 and 25 in the maint guide.

    The original poster asked "Platinum or Gold" warranty.

    Who really cares how or where people spend their money. It seems to me that if I buy that extended warranty, why would YOU care?

    I could care less if anyone buys an extended warranty for their vehicle.

    This topic, to be most useful as originally intended should include:

    ...differences between Platinum and Gold
    ...where to buy
    ...what is, or is not covered by the standard warranty
    ...carb state coverage

    An example of completely useless information:

    ...extended warranties are a waste of money
    ...Toyota vehicles are the most reliable in the world
    ...it'll never break down or have issues outside the standard warranty
    ...you shouldn't have bought a new car if you can't afford to fix it outside the warranty period (my personal favorite)

    Seriously, how freaking arrogant for anyone on here to criticize whether or not someone wants to purchase an extended warranty for whatever reason.

    I too bought a Toyota because they are "generally" very reliable vehicles.

    But...

    I'm gambling that my Prius made by Toyota WILL break down. Yep, I do beleive it will suffer a repair outside the warranty period and I will recoup my costs at that point - if not, maybe Toyota can take that money (that I foolishly spent) and use it to make future vehicles even that much better so those not buying warranties are even that much more satisfied with their decision to not buy them.

    Maybe it's time that this thread takes a left turn...

    If you just purchased a warranty and paid more than $1300 for the Toyota Platinum 7yr/125k than please read through this thread and hit up some of the vendors listed as they can assist you in cancelling your current OVERPRICED extended warranty and possibly save you a few bucks at wholesale pricing.

    I disagree they're completely useless information. Lexus/Toyota are indeed among the most reliable in the world and the odd is strongly against you if you purchase an extended warranty. $0 repair on my 6 year old Lexus RX350 is evidence of that.

    The last statement might be a dumb statement, but no more dumb than assuming it will break down sometime within the warranty or extended warranty period.

    Judgeless might be a fanatic, refusing even to waste $1 on an extended warranty if offered to do so, but he has the right to express his opinions in this thread like everyone else.

    And to counter your evidence of Lexus/Toyota reliability; my 2008 FJ had a $2000+ repair outside (@38k miles) the 3y/36k warranty that was not covered by it or the powertrain warranty to NO fault of my own. Poor design that Toyota will still not own up to but yet make small running changes to the model that are still as of this date, not working. Obviously my experiences were not as favorable as yours.

    I also agree, everyone has a right to express their opinions or the worth of an extended warranty - no dissagreement here.

    However; this thread started out with comparisons between Toyota branded extended warranties and that is where it should stay.

    This thread has much more value when we keep our opinions out, stick to facts, while letting it run its course with that focus. :)
