That is correct. I guess now they have a list. But when I parked at LAX, I told the guy in the booth my car is a plug-in. He asked for my ID and that was it.

So after talking to the airport, they are under the impression that the PIP is a hybrid and the Volt is electric thus the PIP does not qualify. I don't get it.

Because the Prius has ALWAYS been a hybrid, until the 2012 PiP recently arrived. Show them the J-1772 charging port, that proves its no "ordinary" Prius, and in fact plugs in, the same as the Chevy Volt.

The Volt was heavily marketed as an EV with a range extender. We all know that that is marketing double-talk for plug-in hybrid, but most have been successfully confused by the mis-representation.

Hooray! I will get free parking for my trip coming up in a few weeks. Now my only concern is that I plug in the vehicle and it will stay fully charged during my entire 5 day trip. Or are you guys just parking in lot 6 and getting the free parking privilege?

You might want to check out this thread on MNL, about EV chargers and 120V outlets at LAX terminal 6...

My Nissan Leaf Forum • View topic - LAX terminal 6 chargers

also, consider using an "EV charging protocol" card, this basiclly tells someone when they can unplug your car, and you can put your phone # on it for questions. Since you will be gone 5 days, it would be the "most" considerate if you could park near an EV charger or 120V outlet, so once your car is charged up, someone else could also use the charger.. since your PiP will take all of 90 minutes to charge up (or 3 hours on a standard 120V outlet)

I wonder if there is any similar program going on at our usual airport; SFO. If there isn't, there should be!

The City and County of San Francisco offering a discount on parking fees?! You've got to be kidding  These are the folks who talked about collecting a toll from from all vehicles coming into San Francisco from San Mateo County. San Mateo county officials went ballistic. (Geography lesson: San Francisco is surrounded on three sides by water, and the county of San Mateo is on the southern border.)

Just drove my car out of LAX without any issues. They have upgraded all their charging stations at both lots.

On behalf of all the true electric drivers, screw you guys.

They're about to discontinue the programs thanks to increased traffic you're causing. I hope you're happy.

    1. Why do you care? You have a 2006
    2. After they discontinue any program, then it is a fact. Right now it is a rumor, being spread by YOU.
    3. "Screw you guys" ? Is this your normal intelligent retort? :(

This is pretty inflammatory. But unfortunately even a troll can make an important point.

It is outrageous to think that someone can buy a car such as a PiP and get perks like a green HOV sticker and free airport parking, when it NEVER needs to be plugged in, and some in fact never do plug it in, anywhere. At least with a Volt, there is a strong incentive to plug it in, because the gas mileage is poor.

For PiP owners that do plug in, there is a further issue that the number of public charging stations is limited, and having a PiP tie up a public charger for two hours when a Leaf owner might need just a few more electrons to make it home is indeed a serious issue.

I think it more likely that irresponsible PiP owners will ruin it for other PiP-type cars, rather than for "true electrics".

You are of course free to lobby the airports, municipalities, and CARB to create awareness that the PiP is not a true EV and is therefore not deserving of EV privileges. I do think that Toyota will have to add more battery capacity in the future or else find the the PiP treated like a regular Prius by the people in charge.

Why are we fighting each other? What about all those ICE's that park in the EV spots.. Let's attack them.

To someone with a Leaf or Tesla, a PiP is an ICE.

Ouch! I was going to complain that LAWA's policy did not apply to the Ontario airport.

Welcome to reality, where some of us have been well aware of the E85 benefits automakers were reaping for ages even if their customers never pumped a drop of E85 into their tank.

Oddly, those HOV perks are now what push the other automakers to finally try to offer something competitive. It's an incentive with a big-picture often overlooked.
