    If you are considering picking up a new Prius, now is the time.

    Toyota just announced that they will be cutting the supply of all Japan made cars to the US by 30-35% because the Yen is weak right now.

    Expect prices to jump in the coming months.

    Do you know when they will be building the prius factory here in the US? I had heard this was set before the tsunami hit, not sure if plans were adjusted after the disaster. Thanks for the info BTW.

    .80 Yen to a Dollar. They will continue building them, just wont be selling them to America. Well, they will be selling 35% less of them here.

    What people fail to realize is, the gas prices are high here... but they are nothing compared to places in Euro/Asia. They will make more money selling them elsewhere with the exchange rate as it is now.

    Unfortunately, it's opening got delayed for years and this is what it's building instead:

    Funny, the dealer said this about 2 months ago when I purchased my v. I mostly dismissed it as dealer talk. It could be good for jobs in the US if Toyota starts building hybrids here.

    I would not buy an American built hybrid.

    I am calling foul

    :rolleyes:

    I'm not certain where all the drama is coming from, but the way Japan cars were allocated changed. With the diversity of Prius models right now, Toyota has seen a sharp demand for c and v which obviously lowers demand for the "classic".. folks who bought II for the base expense are now open to a c. Or, a base wagon for the extra room. And, those who formerly bought a package 5 Prius and are "making do" now have a choice for more room in all the v models!! And, those who hate the "bridge" console can have a c or v without it.

    I believe truly that this has nothing to do with Japanese yen. It's got everything to do with simple reality. Cut the supply of what's slower to sell and raise the production of the v and c.

    Sorry Jacob. I am not agreeing with you. My pricing isn't going up, either.

    To each his own =) The info that was given in the call states that the Yen got stronger and they want to make more money.

    As far as economics go, a smart business would do that.

    okay, now i'm confused. are we talking about the hatchback, all prius models, or all (if any other) toyota vehicles produced in japan? and if they are produced here, wouldn't the parts for assembly come from there and be subject to the same yen/dollar problem?

    Only Japan built models.

    The American Plant built Toyotas are not affected.

    The bolded part seems odd given charts like these:
    USDJPY=X Basic Chart | USD/JPY Stock - Yahoo! Finance
    USDJPY=X Basic Chart | USD/JPY Stock - Yahoo! Finance
    USDJPY=X Basic Chart | USD/JPY Stock - Yahoo! Finance

    The worst times for the Japanese automakers and exporters was when it $1 USD == 76 - 78 Yen. Now it's a hair under 81 Yen.

    I still remember the days when $1 USD == ~110 - 118 yen, during my 1st trip to Japan in October 01. My last trip to Japan in late 09 was painful, in comparison.
