What does "automatic download of addresses" do?

The internet settings for my Prius IV have an option for "automatic download of addresses" which is not explained anywhere in the (terrible) manuals. What does this setting do?

I believe that determines whether your phone downloads its address book to the car automatically every time it synchs up or you do it manually via "Refresh Phone Book Addresses".

I set mine for automatic assuming it actually works so that way any new addresses I've added will show on the car phone connection.

Can you explain more precisely what that does?

I was under the assumption that the phone book on my BT device was always kept up to date in the car, and that this feature was about "Internet" ,via USB, and not the BT connection. (And, in any case, the car doesn't understand "addresses" on my device.)

That's what I thought, that the Phone Book was dynamically populated every time the phone and car connected. But I think it actually stores the Phonebook and the "Automatic Download" is to make it dynamic and to update it each time.

You could test it by turning your phone off and getting into the car and seeing if the Phonebook is available to other applications like the Nav.

As for the addresses, no one has been successful in getting the Prius to read the addresses from the phone book in any device, not just the iPhone. Hopefully it is a software fix though you have to wonder what they used for testing the feature since none of the major smartphone brands work with the Prius vis a vis the addresses in the phone book.

And you were right to think it! The question is, what must be going through Toyota's mind to deliver such crappy technology?

Again, I guess we were foolish to think that our BT address books would work as, well, address books -- just because it makes perfect sense that they should and says in the manual that they will.

Ah hold on there trash talk. The iphone shares addresses with nav.
    DEST>MY DESTINATIONS>PHONEBOOK
If you've correctly loaded the address in a contact, it will allow you to select it and load it as destination.
I demoed it delivering a Prius three with Nav & entune and iPhone 4 on Thursday.

If the address is available, the contact will be illuminated in the list of PHONEBOOK entries. If there's no address or incorrect data, it'll be grayed out

I'm not familiar with that button either, but if everyone's guessing I think it has to do with Bing POI search results and Navigation. That kinda sounds weak though....I'll take a look on Monday.

I do know that it is not related to the phone book for cell phone. The data is stored in the head unit, but is only available when that specific phone is connected.
In order to refresh your contacts with Entune 6.1"
    SETUP>PHONE>PHONEBOOK>REFRESH PHONE BOOK
Maybe I added an extra step, but it's in the phone settings.

And what, pray tell, is the magic way to "correctly" input addresses into your phone such that they are readable by the nav system. Toyota has not disclosed any instructions or explanations of this.

There's another thread here in which nobody is able to get any address to be navigable.

If you could expand on that it would be a help as I don't know anyone who's iPhone stored addresses are "correct" as far as the Prius system is concerned.

What is the "correct" way to store addresses on the iPhone/Contacts/Outlook list on the computer and iPhone that is readable by the Prius.

As I've stated earlier, that much is true. It's just (as others have confirmed) that the Nav systems does nothing with them, considering them "not navigable".

I posted a video on youtube that'll show how to grab an address from your contacts.
It'll also show why your addresses are not navigable.
Once you correct the address in the phone book of your iPhone, the video will show you how to refresh the phone book so your corrections will be available for destinations in your Prius.

Nate...strong work in deciphering mysteries of Prius nav.

Certainly someone at Navtech needs to be beaten with a rubber hose for making software so dumb. Interestingly, if you start entering the addresses manually, it reads the street names and offers all the variations it finds, street, court, N, E, S, W etc. Google Maps, Garmin, Magellan don't have the problem with "Dr vs. Drive". Toyota must have asked for the "Blue Light Special" when paying for the nav app.

For example the non-navigable address, if you start plugging it in manually, it sees all the possible variations and offers them as choices.

I'm guessing the search algorithm in Navtech could be fixed to read Drive or Dr or ignore what it can't read ("Drive" for example).

It is somewhat daunting to think I have to fix 999 addresses and in so doing render them a bit less friendly for other applications like US Post Office, FedEx, UPS, other nav programs like Google Maps.

But not your issue and thanks again for your figuring out the oxen we are going to have to plow with regarding how addresses must look for Prius/Navtech.

Be nice if Toyota 'splained that to users up front.

Does the 7" HDD system have the same limitation on reading addresses?

Wow Nate, I stand humbled and apologetic. Thanks for following up with this. I'll try it sometime tomorrow and see how it goes. Is there a list somewhere with the proper abbreviations? For example, I have a contact on East Beech Street, is it just the "Street" that has to be abbreviated or is it also the "East" as well?

Interesting thing happens on my 2010 IV, If you want to charge your phone in the car, and the phone is turned off (Totally dead) and try to charge it-the contacts and all the pre-sets are deleted when you turn the car on. Lots of fun to re-do that each time.

    Sounds like a physics experiment.

We are going to need a Rosetta stone. Maybe a sticky thread "Talk Prius to me".

The nice thing about Android is I can quickly change all the contacts on the computer via Gmail contacts and they instantly and automatically update on the phone. Just did a bunch in no time at all. Google Maps still finds them fine.

    Amen.

    Nate,

Do you have an idea on the upper limit of number of phone book addresses the Prius 2012/6" will accept. I had 2700 and it seemed to be truncating the list to 999 so I created a secondary list of 300 and all those showed up.

Didn't know if it was documented somewhere how many was the max number of addresses.

Same thing works for iPhone contacts if you want to launder them through Google.

Is there some global command that changes all the addresses from "Street" to "St"? How did you quickly change ALL the contacts?
