LED info

They are all probably made in China anyway. I have ordered most of mine from iJDMToy. Currently working with them to resolve a design flaw with some turn signal bulbs but that seems to be going well.

You can find similar stuff on ebay for a little less.

 

I used www.autolumination.com Tail Light Brake Light Turn Signal LED Bulbs for all my Gen II LED projects.
They are are all still running fine!

 

Do you mind sharing what design flaw? I havent ordered any LED turn signal bulbs, but I just want to make sure whichever ones I do end up with dont have a similar flaw.

Sure thing. I ordered these bulbs that come with load resistors, but this particlar set has thin wires that run from the bulb outside to the resistors. On the rear light fixtures there was not enough room to get the bulb in plus the wires thus when I went to lock the bulbs in place, it severed the wires.


As a fix, they sent me up a non-load flasher relay. I will be installing that this weekend.

 

** WARNING ** as mentioned before, that flasher relay is very hard to remove. Took me a half hour and my hand was brutalized not to mention the relay. I removed the left-hand side of the dash which help me see what I was doing better (see first pic) but all the work was from below.

The second pic shows the little tab (circled in red) that had to be depressed before it releases. I figured just the tabs on the side held it but nope. I released the side tabs and yanked figuring that would do it but it ended up destroying the unit.

Also blew the fuse for the turn/hazard in the processes. That 10amp fuse is located in the box under the hood.

Well it is in place and working. Haven't put in the LED bulbs yet.

 

Yikes spiderman! That certainly looks like a disaster waiting to happen. I have read up on what is needed for load resistors supporting flashers and the amount of heat these can generate keeps me from installing them on any of my vehicles. I've got LEDs everywhere else, having just about finished my 2001 4Runner. Too bad LED turn signals aren't quite mainstream just yet.

 

I certainly hope they changed the design / layout of the fuse box on the Gen II refresh and beyond. I spent over a 45 minutes yesterday trying to retrieve the stubby little fuse puller that slipped away as I was trying to remove it from its holding slot in my '04. And I had to do retrieve it one other time --- that thing is way to small to pinch / hold in tight spaces. What a pain the the a$$ that was.

 

Yes, just for the few seconds I had these bulbs hooked up and flashing, the resistors were very warm to the touch... bad design. The no-load relay would be the way to go for sure but you do lose the bulb out indication.
I second that thought that it is too bad LED are not entirely mainstream yet. Probably a conspiracy on the part of the incandescent bulb makers.

 

All external LED bulbs mod complete. Nice to have it all LEDs. Not overly impressed with "super bright" LEDs but they will do just fine. Glad it is over.

 

Congrats on accomplishing this mod, spiderman. Can you post a video of what the turn signals look like?

I decided to go with the Valenti's instead. At much greater expense.
But I will likely try your set-up with my 4Runner.
