I know I am beating a dead horse as this topic is well discussed. I just need to be pointed in the right direction on where to get the Platinum Extended Warranty. I just bought a 2012 Prius and the dealer offered the Platinum Extended Warranty (7 yr - 100000 mi) for $1840. I have 30 days to cancel the Warranty. I know there are many out there with more knowledge on non-dealer Platinum Extended Warranty.... where do I go to check out the price... and is this non-dealer warranty the same thing as what the dealer is offering?

I got a 4 yr 125k mile warranty, I drive about 600 miles a week, so to cover me across 4 years, this was good for me. Whether I use it or not I would rather be coverved for a $3500 computer at 3 years and 100k miles than not. The base 3yr/36k mile would not get me too far past the first year.

Go to the commercial sales part of priuschat. There is a thread there about getting the ext warranty from Troy. It's the same Toyota warranty as any dealer but much much less expensive

Total waste of money on any Toyota. I wish I could make all the profits these dealers are getting out of people that do not understand how things work.

You can get the warranty here for like $995 I think.

I have 80,000 miles and many have hit 100,000 miles on their gen 3 Prius. Ask these people how much they spent on repairs before you spend $1,000 to $2,000+.

The warranty does not cover the battery. The dealer will lie and tell you different. Most people that buy extended warranties fall for the GAP insurance, the Teflon coated seats and all the other misc stuff the dealer makes their profits on.

Do a little research on the various warranties already covering your car -- I think you will find that most of the parts you are most concerned about are already covered for 5 years and 100k. The battery has a longer warranty -- and depending on the state emission warranty you may have many parts that go out to 10 year and 150k.

This warranty you purchased is through Toyota and you can buy it from any Toyota dealer -- it is a factory warranty. You will speak to the same people at TFS regardless of the purchase location. I sent an e-mail to Troy on this forum and he was very helpful on the prices coverage.

If you plan on keeping the car for a long time and drive it a lot -- the 7 year 125k warranty makes the most sense but I don't think you will spend the $1400.00 price on repairs. The extended warranty expressly excludes many of the hybrid parts - so if you don't get them through the emission coverage you don't get then through the extended warranty.

If you decide to go aftermarket -- really read the fine print .... never hear anything good about those.

GAP insurance actually can be a helpfull thing depending on your situation. I had customers purchase gap from me and then total their cars soon thereafter and had it not been for the GAP insurance they would have still owed thousands to the bank after the insurance paid out. Car insurance only pays wholesale value when they total a car, not retail like everyone thinks.

I am sure there are stories for all the extra stuff scum bag dealers sell. Extended warranties, GAP insurance, and prepaid maintenance are all items that dealers sell. The odds of using these items are slim. Your odds are better not buying them. Save your money.

I have learned that the guys that sell those items really believe they are helping the consumer. They are trained that is a good thing. Most used or new sales guys are not bright people. Most do not have a collage education.

I purchased the extended warranty from Troy at Greenfield toyota after purchasing my vehicle in NY. I had already purchased the warranty when I bought the car, so I had to have it cancelled. I was more than happy spending my money with troy. I hope I can do it again in the future. <br>

I got the ext warranty. I pay for house insurance every year in case it burns down.. I put this in the same league.
I'm sure with 1-2 little things, it will pay for itself.

If someone needs gap insurance it basically means they can't afford the car they are buying otherwise they could personally make up the difference.

As far as extended warranties it is all about finances and peace of mind. If your car had a 5000 dollar problem could you come up with the money to fix it? If the answer is no then that person should probably get the warranty.

Home owners insurance and auto insurance is not the same. Home owners and auto insurance protect you from catastrophic damage. Example: Your house burns to the ground, your car hits a couple of cars and creates $40,000 in damage and $80,000 in medical damage. Paying a small amount every year to prevent this risk is worth it and it is required by law.

An extended warranty is not insurance. It is a pre calculated business model to make money. Toyota knows the reliability of the car and adds a profit for both Toyota and the dealer that sells it. 99% of the time the consumer never benefits.

Instead of paying money for peace of mind why not read reliability reports and read the Prius forums regarding reliability of the Prius models that have been shipping more than 10 years. There are brands like Chyrslier and Land Rover that have horrible reliability reports. My peace of mind is I choose not to buy one of those brands.

I also base my decision on my last Toyota. I bought it new, put 305,000 miles over 10 years and total cost of repairs was sub $1,000. The first repair started at 170,000 miles. I have 80,000 on my Prius with zero repairs. Well my light bulb went out yesterday and I had to shell out $10.95 for a new one. That is one of the many things not covered by an extended warranty.

The problem with Toyota/Lexus is you're more likely not to get those 1-2 little things.

But isn't the home insurance model the same? I don't know the percent, but don't most policies for fire never pay?
Plus I'm not a mechanic and can't tweak it. I'm still in my 30 days and can cancel it.
Sheesh, I don't know what to do
I've never had one, I've never had a Toyota and I've had a lot of recent car repairs in my previous car.

I'm not sure what a collage education is, but there are plenty of bright and/or college educated people in the auto sales industry, just as there are plenty of jerk customers that drive into a auto dealership and have a chip on their shoulder before they even get out of the car and ruin the experience before they even open their mouth. The Prius is a great vehicle, but it still is a depreciating item. If you spend $25000 on a new Prius and as soon as you drive it off the lot it loses 10-15% of its value and for some reason you crash it guess what? You are out $2500. The reason people spend a few hundred bucks on GAP is the same reason you spend a few hundred bucks a month on car insurance. The chances of something catastrophic happening are slim, but if and when it does happen, its nice to know you have insurance. If you get it or not its your choice.

I know plenty of people who have never set foot on a college campus and are much brighter than those that have.

Look man, if you already paid for it, and you like it keep it. With the exception of being drugged, or the F&I guy putting a gun to your head you must have seen some value in it at the time.

I disagree with you. Toyota is statistically the most recalled auto manufacturer on the planet. An extended warranty is an insurance policy plain and simple. And it is also a profit generating item. Just like everything else in this world. You don't think your auto insurance or homeowners carrier makes a profit? How about your medical insurance carrier? If you are a safe and healthy person, guess what? You are just a profit generating hedge against the small minority of people who are not.

Any Toyota dealer can sell you ToyotaCare, and I was offered ToyotaCare for:
    5yr/125k is $875
    6yr/125k is $1130
    7yr/125k is $1270
