Maybe a Fusion Energi plug-in instead of a PiP?

But he said 8 of them were delivered. Not 8 orders taken.

They have actually delivered 8 (Ford sent this message to Green Car Reports). Ford has been so opaque about FFE, who knows what is happening. There hasn't been a single test drive ... and apparently deliveries have started ... I guess just to tick someone's list of commitments for 2011 at Ford.

How many FFEs are being made? Could it be less than some limit on mandatory testing?

Don't know - but can't be less than the 600 Active-Es from BMW that has an EPA rating.

Nobody can match Toyota/Prius for mpg. I wouldn't trust others yet to deliver these things without stuff breaking at random times (think GM).

Why do you have to have pre-warm? Not for the EV mode, right? Unless your trip is really short, you will have some engine action going on. No garage? If so, summer sun might not be good for it either.

A friend's workplace just replaced the prius with a fusion (not electric), and misses the prius . . .

Your lack of trust in other vendors is your choice. PM me when your prius can achieve MPG's like I'm getting in my Volt and I'll reconsider Toyota (See my sig). But its clear that the MPG crown has already passed to others, even if you have not noticed. it.

For many drivers, the EV and PHEVs are already destroying Prius in overall MPG. Prius is down to #7 in most fuel efficent vehicles. The Energi will just push it down one place farther in the list. (The FFE and Energi being late to the game and mystery scilence make one pause, however. )

The PiP will do only a little better than a prius. It might be able to overtake the EPA's total for the Volt, but I don't think it will. Real world data at voltstats.net, and at the EPA, show the initial EPA estimate was somewhat pessimistic about the Volt.

A little better? Here's a test. My wife gets Consumer's Report mpg in any car she drives. Consumer's Report got 44 mpg in my gen 2 Prius which remarkably is what she got when she drove it during the Spring/Summer of 08. When I get it I'll let her drive the PiP to work (I was going to let her since her Venza is only 28 mpg) until gas goes back under $4/gal or she gets sick of it. I'll report back in a month.

Hope you get it back one day ..

The real question for EPA "milage" will be how the EPA balances the CD and HV modes. at 22% EV and 78% its about equal to the EPA's volt 60MPGe overall. Second part of my comment was intended to say I expect many PiP users will, as many volt users have, significantly exceed EPA. EPA testing for EV mode is still in its early stages. The've dialed in gas milage, but EV is still too dependent on driver.
